Helping the Citizens of Kibera, Kenya

Muanzo Mpya Organization

Inspired by the experiences of Eunice Akoth, a group of high school juniors from Miss Porter’s School created Muanzo Mpya. Growing up in a diverse community, Eunice endured many challenges, all of which taught her to embrace her own differences. She feels fortunate for her opportunities and dreams of giving back to the place that made her the person she is today.

We decided to make this dream a reality by helping the youth of Kibera receive the amazing opportunities Eunice was fortunate enough to obtain. Muanzo Mpya is a non-profit organization that strives to bring awareness and give back to the Kibera community.

About Kibera

Kibera, about four miles outside of Nairobi, Kenya, is the largest urban slum in Africa and is classified as the second largest shanty-town in the world. About the size of New York’s Central Park (2.5 square kilometers), it is estimated that somewhere between 700,000 and 1 million people live in the slum.

The unemployment rate is around 80%, only 20% of the population has access to electricity, and most lack proper toilet facilities. It is a place brimming with disease, danger, overpopulation, and corruption. Mountains of trash litter the streets and the lack of sanitation or waste management causes human waste to be left everywhere.

Despite all of these challenges, Kibera’s rich culture and history manifest in its tightly knit community. The Swahili term “Harambe” represents the coming together of a community to achieve a common goal, which the Kibera community heavily embodies. Families often share cooking supplies and support each other through losses and tragedies. Through the struggles, “there is always hope for tomorrow,” as Eunice puts it.

Muanzo Mpya's Mission

Our mission is to shed light on this community and support the unique potential of these youth by providing aid for those in need. Our first step towards achieving this goal is partnering with established organizations that have local connections within Kibera. One such organization is Future Stars Development and Rescue Center.

About Future Stars Development

Future Stars Development was founded in 2008 by native Kiberan, Peres Agai Anyango when she decided to house two young orphans. Today, the center has helped over 300 children and made a positive impact on dozens of families all over Kibera. Future Stars Development provides free education to children from nursery school to fifth grade. The organization also takes in abandoned, orphaned, and neglected children and either provides housing for the child at the shelter or finds them a family to live with. Strict assessments are made to ensure that the child receives the best care possible. Though farming in the area is difficult, the center also grows food to help supplement the diets of the children they care for with fruits and vegetables. This is an organization founded on love. The teachers and staff all care deeply for the children they aid, going above and beyond to ensure that every child is cared for and has the supplies and opportunities they need to live a happy and successful life.

Donations

In order to help the community of Kibera receive the opportunities and aid they deserve, we must first support the local organizations in Kibera. Future Stars Development is always in need of donations to help keep their doors open. With your help, they can provide food, care and safety, and free education to children living in Kibera. Any donation no matter how small makes a huge difference!
