Helping Senior Citizens Reconnect

Hi all!
My name is Jocelyn Reynolds, and I am a freshman at Newton High School.
I started a community service project in 4th grade called Spread Some Sunshine, and I have set up many community service acts as well as small acts of kindness since then. This includes throwing a Christmas party at a nursing home, delivering care packages to homeless people in New York City, and preparing supply bags for the homeless in my area.
Last week, I was excited to finally be able to hug my grandma for the first time in over a year. While a happy occasion, it was also difficult to see the effects that lack of connection with the outside world have had on her. Today, I am starting this fundraiser to purchase interactive and lifelike cats and dogs for seniors at local nursing homes!
These robotic pets have been proven to reduce stress and agitation in both dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. During times of COVID-19, most nursing home visits have been restricted completely. Purchasing these pets would give patients social interaction, as well as some structure in their lives. Additionally, this introduces a small bit of control for patients; giving them something to care for goes a long way!
Unfortunately, these pets do not come cheap. I’ve set my starting GoFundMe goal at $500. All funds will go directly to the purchase of these pets. My goal is to buy FOUR pets to donate which would directly improve the life of a senior who might feel disconnected from the world.
