Helping Havertown's Homeless

Beschermde donatie
The Havertown Community rallied together over Christmas to help two of our neighbors, who do not have a regular home. We've set a goal of paying for rooms for the two men at the Summit Inn Hotel through the start of Spring, on March 20, 2017.  John is already at the hotel, and we hope to figure out a way to get Joe there as well. This will give them a warm place to stay through the winter. It's not a long-term solution, but it is a way to show these men their community cares.

Any money you donate goes directly to support these two individuals. Anything over our goal amount will be used to purchase items for the Connect Shelter for Delaware County residents.

This movement began in mid-December with a simple post on the Havertown Community Group Facebook page. Below are excerpts from those posts to give folks new to this story more background:

Michelle McHugh is taking donations for John, whom she has seen / talked to at the Route 100 Line stop regularly for the past 10+ years. John often sleeps in the woods and does go to shelters when conditions are extreme. He is known for being friendly, smart, articulate and non-intrusive. He rarely asks for anything and is originally from Havertown. We don't know much more of his story, but we hope that, by showing our support, it will give him the foundation to make whatever changes necessary to get back on his feet.

Michelle McKnight is taking donations for Joe, whom she sees outside the Giant Shopping Center on Township Line Rd. daily. He has an occasional place to stay at night, with family in the area. He never asks for anything and keeps to himself. He is friendly when approached and prefers to avoid the shelters. He is mostly exposed to the elements during the day, although he does say he goes to the library. We don't know much more about Joe's story, but we hope to be the catalyst for change in this man's life.

These are lofty goals, we know, but by looking below,  you'll see that we've already made an impact:

Items collected in just two weeks:
Sweaters, coats, boots, socks, new underwear, thermal underwear, hand warmers, foot warmers, gloves, hats, scarves, shampoo, soap, deoderant, shaving cream, razors, cleansing wipes, blankets, backpacks, jerky, protein bars, gift cards, jeans.

Other items delivered to the Connect Shelter:
Women's underwear, depends, sanitary napkins, tampons, suitcases, duffel bags.
