As a Marine Corps OIF Veteran, I'm going to Standing Rock for the Veteran Wall and to support the Sioux.
I will be using my own resources as the Veterans For Standing Rock organization is currently a bit overwhelmed due to the incredible response to their call for action. I am asking you for financial support and help. I am currently mapping my route, and need your help to get there. All funds which exceed my needs will be donated to the Veterans For Standing Rock organization.
Why Standing Rock?
1. To combat discrimination. I see Standing Rock as a low-risk/high-return move on the pipeline company's behalf. As a nation, we must stand united against those (individuals or corporations) who view diversity as anything other than an advantage to a community/society.
2. US Govt as neglectful stewards. I believe that the route was chosen with belief that the Sioux would not combat it and fight for their land that was guaranteed to them by the Federal Government. Eminent Domain should NEVER apply to Indian lands, nor for the benefit of corporations. It's our duty as citizens to hold our government liable for their actions, or else we are equally as responsible. #fortlaramietreaties
3. The children. As a mother of four, I cannot stand-by and do nothing. Especially because of my children, I must lead by example and stand for causes which will make this country an even greater place for all of our children.
5. Militarized forces. My father is a political refugee from Ethiopia. My parents fled Ethiopia at the end of the 1970s. My family made it out, whereas many did not. My older sister was born whilst the capital city, Addis Abeba was under military curfew. As the United States, this is NOT the direction that we must head in. Many generations have passed since we have seen war on our land - let's keep it that way.
