Our sweet baby Charlie was hit by a car on November 23rd. He was injured badly, but he is still fighting, and we are doing everything we can to fight for him too. The only barrier standing between Charlie and the healing he deserves is finances.

Charlie’s injuries are serious: a leak in his lung, a dislocated elbow and hip, trauma to his snout and jaw, and swelling in his brain. He has been on continuous pain medication, chest tube suction, and treatments to keep him stable. Now that he is finally strong enough, he has undergone the surgeries needed to save his life. The total cost of his emergency care, tests, and surgical interventions has come to $25,000 and while every penny was worth it to bring him home safely, we simply can’t carry this financial weight alone.

We are living off part-time work as Lilly unexpectedly lost her job caring for an elderly woman who suddenly passed away. Now, caring for Charlie through this recovery is a full-time job in itself. Charlie needs round-the-clock support, even requiring two people to help him up and down the stairs to our apartment. Lilly can’t look for work until Charlie is stable enough to be safely left alone. We are doing everything we can, but we can’t do it without help.

Charlie has been the sweetest, most sensitive, attuned, beautiful dog from the moment he was adopted. He lights up every room he walks into. Our whole extended family adores him, people literally fly out just to visit him. Four years ago he was registered as a service animal because he naturally senses and responds to people’s emotional and physical needs. He has supported so many people through some of the hardest moments of their lives, including those at a nonprofit helping disabled people returning home from prison. He has carried so much for others. He has carried so much for us. All we want now is the chance to carry him through this trauma.

He deserves the chance to heal, to come home, to live the beautiful, intentional, love-filled life that will help give meaning to what has been such a nightmare. We cannot accept that reckless trauma should be the end of his story.
