Help us recover from Break In

Hello everyone! My name is Barb and I am the owner and operator of Treasures and Memories in Brookdale Plaza, here in Peterborough. I opened this business in late 2019, right before the pandemic hit. I know, timing, right? Lol. Throughout this pandemic we have followed all of the protocols, restrictions, and safety measures. We have endured through all of the various lockdowns and closures. Despite all of that, we have managed to survive and grow our business. Until this morning at 4:26 am, January 22.

We received a call from Peterborough Police advising us there had been a break in at our store.

The thief broke in by smashing the main window next to the door with a rock. He then pushed the shelving in the widow out of the way to gain entry, causing all of this merchandise to be completely smashed, damaged or utterly destroyed. He then proceeded to loot several areas of the store. He then proceeded to our Zippo display stand, punching and kicking it and finally lifting it over head and smashing it on the floor, damaging and destroying more merchandise and fixtures in the process. He filled his pants with Zippos and a few other items and left.

The good news is the police apprehended him in the parking lot when they arrived and confirmed it was him through our video surveillance. He was arrested, charged, has been denied bail and is currently in Lindsay jail. No merchandise was recovered from him, he either dumped somewhere close by or handed it off to an accomplice.

I would like to thank the Peterborough Police for their quick response, help, patience and kindness shown to us throughout this ordeal. They even walked the parking lot to see if they could find any of the merchandise he may have dumped.

The bad news is that none of this will be covered by insurance, due to an oversight on my part in failing to update some information. Please don’t beat me up too badly, I am new to this business world.

If other businesses can defy the rules and ask for and get support in paying their fines, it certainly can’t hurt for us to ask for support in recovering from this. Right?
