Virginia Free Farm - Help us GROW for GOOD

Who We Are
Virginia Free Farm at Spotted Pig Holler is a family-run non-profit that supports the Louisa County, Greater Richmond Area, Fluvanna County, and Albemarle County communities by providing healthy, nutritious produce & poultry to families in need, as well as seeds, plants, and consultation services to establish community gardens & educational programs for elementary-aged children. With all the services we are providing and those we hope to expand, we need your help to pay for the day-to-day costs of maintaining the farm and assist us in building up our resources so that we can expand what we offer to more communities and in more ways.
How We Farm
At the farm, we take our lead from Mother Nature & indigenous agricultural practices that enrich the land as it provides us with life-sustaining food. We work with our environment using controlled burning to clear & replenish nutrients within the soil, companion planting to mimic the abundance found in the wild ecosystem around us, and by thoughtfully harvesting wild edibles to ensure there is enough left behind to feed native animals & regenerate their population. We believe each one of us should be a steward of the earth & our fellow humans by acting deliberately and to live with veracity, beneficence, & fidelity.
What We’ve Done So Far
Currently, we are growing in three small fields and harvesting approx. 200 lbs. of produce per week, plus eggs & poultry. We have saved and provided seeds to families & community groups. We’ve assisted in the establishment of several community gardens and support a local group that assists women recently released from Fluvanna Correctional Center to transition back into normal life. All of the food grown on the farm goes out to the community and the vast majority of the funding has come directly out of our founders, Amy Rose & Derek's pocket with some income earned through our Etsy shop and one-time donations.
We have accomplished so much with what we have, imagine with us what we can do with your help.
What's Next with Funding
With the goal of $50,000, we intend to put that money directly into the farm to repair existing structures, expand our fields, and develop new programs for the communities we serve.
• As we are able to expand, we will provide internships for local students to support their career path in following majors: Agriculture, Marketing, Culinary Arts, Business, Political Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology, and potentially more.
• Provide basic gardening, farming, and cooking education to those we support.
• Purchase more farmland.
• Connect local food distribution groups with small farmers by providing compensation for the produce and meat they raise and create a new source of whole, healthy food to those in need.
• Offer paid positions to our full-time volunteers so they can provide for their families while supporting this important work and run our day-to-day operations.
