Help Translate the Oakland Tenants Rights Handbook

We are a group of volunteer tenants' rights counselors who came together to write the Oakland Tenants Rights Handbook— a comprehensive plain language guide to tenants' rights in Oakland that can be accessed for free online. We recently updated the handbook to reflect new changes in state and local laws, and now we’re trying to get it to as many people as possible.

Because we know that non-English speakers are significantly more vulnerable to landlord harassment and have more difficulty accessing services, we want to translate the handbook into Spanish. The more people can access the handbook, the more that they'll be empowered to stand up for themselves and their neighbors against landlords standing in their way of a clean and safe place to live. While this one handbook will not solve all Oakland tenants’ problems, it will help more folks know and assert their rights.

We want to invest significantly in the handbook’s translation, as it contains technical and legal language and  paying an ethical wage to the translator is integral to language justice. We have received a quote for 19 cents a word, which comes out to around $5,000. All donations will go directly to the cost of translating the handbook. The Spanish version of the handbook will be available for free online, just like the English version. 

Any extra funds raised will be saved for translating future updates to the handbook.

Somos un grupo de consejeros voluntarios de los derechos de inquilinos que nos unimos para escribir el Manual de Los Derechos de Inquilinos de Oakland. Es una guía en un lenguaje sencillo sobre los derechos de inquilinos en Oakland. Se puede obtenerlo gratis en la red. Nosotros lo actualizamos recientemente para reflejar cambios nuevos en los leyes locales y del estato, y ahora queremos distribuirlo a la mayoría de personas que sea posible.

Queremos traducirlo a español porque sabemos que personas que solo hablan español son más vulnerables al maltrato de sus dueños de casa y tienen más dificultad para accesar servicios de inquilinos. Aunque una guía no va a solucionar todos los problemas de los inquilinos de Oakland, va a ayudarnos a entender y afirmar nuestros derechos. 

Buscamos una traducción exacta, porque la guía tiene lenguaje legal técnico. También, queremos pagar un sueldo ético al traductor porque sabemos que un sueldo ético es un parte integral de justicia de idioma. Hemos recibido un presupuesto de 19 centavos por palabra, pues costará $5,000. Cada donación va a ir directamente al costo de la traducción. Tanto la versión en español como en inglés estará disponible en línea gratis.
