Help the Lam Family with Caitlin's AVSD Surgery

Hi there, we are Katelynn Robertson and Krista Rowland-Collins. Katelynn is a Postpartum Doula and Krista puts together gift baskets for families of babies born with Down syndrome . We have both had the privilege of supporting Derek and Elaine Lam since they welcomed their beautiful daughter Caitlín into the world in November of 2021. Caitlín has Down syndrome and a hole in her heart called an AVSD (atrioventricular septal defect) that requires major open-heart surgery. Caitlín's surgery has been set for the end of March 2022, during which time the surgeons will close the hole in her heart, which will better distribute oxygenated blood to her body and give her more energy for all that growing little ones do! All pediatric cardiac surgeries in Alberta take place in Edmonton at the Stollery Children's Hospital; however, most families have an FSCD contract (from the Alberta government) to help cover some of the costs of out-of-town medical trips. Unfortunately, with Covid delays, the Lam family has been told that it is doubtful that they will be receiving a contract until after the surgery. Therefore, the expenses associated with traveling to Edmonton for life-altering surgery for their daughter would not be covered. Many of our families in the Down syndrome community have experienced their own medical trip like this and know what a help having the expenses covered is. Please join us in supporting Derek & Elaine so that Caitlín's surgery does not cause them financial distress. Money is the last thing a family should be stressed about when going through their infant's open-heart surgery. Thank you!!!
