At just 10 years old, Tawnya endured unspeakable abuse at the hands of a man in a position of authority at her church. By 17, she fled her family home—where she could find no safety—only to fall into the hands of another abuser: a man 26 years her senior. Manipulated by her vulnerability and need for basic necessities, he coerced her into exchanging her body, her devotion, for food and shelter.

Over nearly a decade of marriage, Tawnya lived under his control, enduring relentless manipulation, exploitation, and sexual violence. Her life, which should have been filled with love and respect, was instead dominated by fear and coercion. It wasn’t until years later that Tawnya recognized the depth of the abuse and how she had been trafficked, even under the guise of marriage.

Less than 3 weeks ago, In December 2024, after escalating violence and following a sexual assault, Tawnya fled Texas with her children, following advice from the San Antonio Police Department, the Bexar County Family Justice Center, her therapist, and Texas Legal Aid. Their safety was her priority, and she is determined to rebuild her life here in Oregon, far from the danger they left behind.

Since arriving in Oregon, Tawnya’s resilience has shone through. Her children are enrolled in their new school, and Tawnya herself has secured a well-paying job. She has obtained career certifications, and is already on track for a promotion.

But now, her abuser has filed a lawsuit seeking full custody of the children, child support, and attorney fees. With the financial backing of his wealthy brother, he has hired private legal representation. Meanwhile, Tawnya—who has worked tirelessly to provide for her family—needs $7,500 to secure an attorney who can fight for her children’s safety and well-being. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and time is running out. She must retain legal counsel by *February 3, 2025*.
