Hello all,
My name is Yanna, I am 16 years of age and currently attend John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School. I am aspiring to take advantage of more experiences that will broaden my development in dance and allow me to make progress towards becoming a more mature and well-rounded dancer. I first began dancing around the age of 5 and became more serious about dance when I auditioned at Davidson and was accepted my 6th grade year. My journey at Davidson began with ballet and moved on towards me presently being enrolled in modern 4, the highest level obtainable in the area of modern dance. As a developing dancer it is important for me to be in a structured educational and motivating environment.
This summer June 21-July 30, I am one of very few selected from my school to go on a 5 week dance mission tour that kicks off with the first two weeks in Santa Cruz, California where I will attend The Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center Summer Intensive. On the second part of the tour, I will travel to Rochester, New York to participate in Garth Fagan’s Summer Movement Institute. SMI is the dance company responsible for training my teacher, Bessie Award winner Sharon Skepple Mayfield for 18 years! On this tour I will be training under the direction Sharon Skepple Mayfield and her former instructor Garth Fagan, the choreographer of “The Lion King”. In preparation for the tour, I will be training for several weeks with Skepple Mayfield Dance in our hometown of Augusta, Georgia.
The funds collected during this fundraising will help cover cost associated with the west to east coast tour from Santa Cruz to Rochester to include, transportation, lodging, groceries, roundtrip airfare, TWDCC tuition & GFD tuition, and weekend activities. Throughout the tour I will experience a taste of what a professional dancer’s life is all about: refining technique and performance, broadening understanding of various dance styles, experiencing choreography and learning about body awareness, nutrition and best practice for dancers health.
It would mean so much for me to go on this tour, as this tour provides the opportunity to display my dance ability in the presence of professionals and to audition for scholarships, roles and performances. This is an experience that will take me to great lengths throughout my dance journey. I will forever be grateful for whatever you can give as I thank you in advance for taking the time out to hear about my journey.
