Help Save Our Public Park in Flagler Village

The City of Fort Lauderdale has promised the residents of Flagler Village, as outlined in the Downtown Master Plan, a public park to be developed on city-owned property at 301 N. Andrews Avenue, the former One-Stop-Shop location, for 15 years but has failed to deliver on their promise to develop the park.

Now the city is considering an unsolicited proposal from a private corporation to take over the entire property and build a private commercial concert venue developed by Damn Good Hospitality Group. The developer is the operator of the concert venue Revolution Live, which is currently located in the Himmarshee Entertainment District, and they want to relocate to the former One-Stop-Shop location; smack dab in the middle of our quiet residential neighborhood of Flagler Village.

The City will likely vote on this with very little time for community input. We would like to be a part of the conversation. The only way to do that is to hire an attorney specializing in this type of litigation so they can intervene on our behalf to stop the city from steamrolling over us as their constituents.

This is why we need your help to save our public park which is at serious risk of being taken over by private interests without any regard for the considerable harm this kind of development would cause to the entire community of Flagler Village. 

Here are some of the possible uses of the public park which can be refined if we can convince the City of Fort Lauderdale Commission to do that right thing:

➼ A dog park with a water station

➼ Children's playground

➼ Botanical gardens

➼ Edible landscapes

➼ Yoga classes

➼ Art classes

➼ Public art exhibitions

➼ Splash pad

➼ Small canopy-covered bandstand

➼ Bayan tree showcase

We believe the public land should be developed as a public park with many amenities for all to enjoy now and for future generations to come.

A new park in Flagler Village would also offer many benefits to our community such as: 

➼ Promote community wellness and health

➼ Provide more green space to enjoy in a densely populated neighborhood

➼ Be more desirable to live, work, and play

➼ Encourage recreational activity for adults and children

➼ Increase property values

➼ Provide vegetative buffers to developments

➼ Produce a habitat for many types of native wildlife

➼ Create a safe gathering place

➼ Preserve and protect the old-growth trees on the property from being cut down

➼ Improve psychological and social health

➼ Improve the attractiveness of the community to new home buyers and new businesses

➼ Foster economic growth by attracting tourists, filling hotel rooms, and bringing customers to local stores

➼ Allow for all types of neighborhood events such as a farmers market, art shows from local artists, arts and crafts festivals, and much more community-building opportunities

➼ Provide intrinsic environmental, aesthetic, and recreational benefits to our entire City

As you can see, the park our community envisions isn't just a sprawling piece of grass; it could have many far-reaching benefits and amenities for our residents, businesses, and visitors alike, and it's an opportunity for the community to engage in a host of activities that will have significant beneficial impacts on their lives.
