Devastating 500-Year Flood – Help Friend, Colleague, Professional and Community Leader

As a friend and fellow chiropractor in Iowa, I am reaching out today to ask for your support for Drs. Leah and Lee Malmstrom, valued leaders within the Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS) and the Spencer community. Their clinic, Spencer Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Northwest Iowa, has been hit hard by a catastrophic flood, a rare event so severe it’s termed a “500-year flood” with only a 0.02% chance of occurring in any given year.

The Little Sioux River overflowed its banks, inundating homes, and businesses with unprecedented floodwaters. Despite not being in a designated flood plain, the Spencer Chiropractic and Wellness Center was not immune to this devastation. The clinic was engulfed in 5 feet of water, leading to the loss of most everything inside, including crucial equipment like x-ray units, adjusting tables, decompression tables, computers, and essential office supplies. Clean-up efforts are underway, make-shift clinics have been created to provide a modest venue for serving patients in need, and initial calculations estimate the loss and reconstruction costs to be in the six-figure range.

Drs. Leah and Lee Malmstrom have tirelessly served our community, not only through their chiropractic practice but also as dedicated leaders within ICS, holding Board of Director positions, including President, District Leadership, and committee members. They have led advocacy efforts and successfully shepherded our members through the unprecedented COVID pandemic. Their leadership helped guide our members, providing support and stability during uncertain times and have given countless hours to drive success for our members and the chiropractic profession.

Now, in their time of need, we have a chance to give back just as many of us would hope for if we were caught in this same, devastating situation.
