Please allow me to introduce Kavell who is my Property Manager in Barbados. I have known Kavell for over 7 years and I have listened to many stories of her happy childhood growing up in Jamaica. I was in Barbados when Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica. After several days of no communication, Kavell received the good news that her family had survived, however their family home had been completely destroyed. Attention now turns to rebuilding their family home based in rural Jamaica into a much more storm resistant house. Hello, my name is Kavell Worrell, I truly appreciate you taking a moment to read my story. My family lost their home to a natural disaster recently - Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica that hit the western end of the island at category 5. Many homes were lost including ours, based high in rural Jamaica, where my mother, brother and my nephew live.

They say a picture paints a 1000 words, the picture in our page was once a happy rural home but due to the power of the storm, the entire home was decimated with the exception of the bathroom which is made of a brick wall. All furniture - Beds, wardrobes, clothes, appliances have been been destroyed or blown away. My family have been left traumatised and living in the open – fearing that a similar atrocity may happen again. At present some wood has been salvaged to create a room. Much of the local area has been devastated and whilst we are so grateful that everyone survived, we are now trying to raise funds to rebuild our family home in a stronger, storm proof fashion.

For the way forward, and with your kindness, considering that natural disasters such as Melissa may reoccur, we are hoping to rebuild a home using bricks/concrete which will be much more resilient against future storms. This undertaking will be costly. My family is small, my mother, brother and myself. I am the only one working and I am based in Barbados, where my income is not sufficient to deal with the expenses that face us to rebuild our family home. My heart breaks every time I review the harsh reality of the devastation.

All monies gratefully donated will be used to secure building materials: blocks, cement, steel, stones, and all other materials that will be necessary for the construction of the home including labour. The aim is to rebuild the family home with preliminary estimates suggesting that we will need upwards of $20,000 USD.
