Help Nigerian Village Primary School stand again
Donación protegida
UPDATE:
Dear all,
We want to thank everyone for their very generous contributions. The donations to this project have been an invaluable contribution to my PhD defence ceremony. More importantly, the fundraiser has been a great success. With all the money I was able to send to Nigeria, Umar and his team have been able to renovate the primary school in Agbongun. As of Monday January 10th 2022, the school is up and running again and has even been welcoming new students. Umar and his team have been able to finance a new roof, a new floor as well as new chairs and desks for the students and staff. I am extremely grateful for their work, which would not have been possible without all your donations. As a team, we are extremely grateful for every donation and would like to thank everyone who contributed once again. It is thanks to you that the children in Agbongun and surrounding areas now have a safe place for their daily education.
I have added some more pictures of what the school looks like now below:

We thank you again,
Professor Ayobami Ojebode, Ajetunmobi Umar Olansile and Larissa Schulte Nordholt.

For the occasion of my PhD defence at the institute for History, Leiden University, on December 1st, 2021, I would like to call your attention to the following project in hopes that you might consider donating. My thesis concerns the Africanization of African History in the twentieth century and a major part of it deals with the University of Ibadan. I spent a wonderful month and half in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 2018 and would like to do something in return to help support education in Nigeria. I hope to do so by raising money to rebuild a primary school building:
Agbongun is a marginalised village in Ibadan, Nigeria in terms of government presence. The only government-owned primary school in the village was built in the 1950s, but collapsed years after. In the 1980s, the then Governor of the old Oyo State, Nigeria, constructed a block of two classrooms for the village. When the building of the school was in its good shape, pupils from neighbouring villages did come there to learn. Reverse is the case now that the roof of the school is so fragile that it can fall any time (pictures attached). This current situation of the school has forced parents to withdraw their children, leaving only eight (8) of them to their fate. Therefore, we all need to salvage this situation by helping the village, as all assistance they could seek keep rendering their dream of educating their children hopeless. The village has requested a temporary solution, and that is roofing of the school, perhaps the government might later listen to them and give them a new structure for school. After costing, we estimated #800,000 (about USD2000) to roof the two classrooms from beginning to end, and buy some pieces of chairs and desks for the pupils' use. No amount is too small to help this course; putting smiles on the faces of these villagers in Nigeria means a lot to them.

- Umar Ajetunmobi is a postgraduate student of Communication and Language Arts, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He specializes in Applied Communication, but with special interest in development, political and media communications studies. His enthusiasm to always seek people-oriented solutions to human problems gave birth to this current project. He strongly believes that calling people to action are best achieved when we are a community or group of like minds. Having these principles in mind, Umar approached Professor Ayobami Ojebode of Communication and Language Arts Department, University of Ibadan, when he visited a village school in Ibadan, Nigeria. When Umar narrated the distasteful state of the school and the efforts the villagers had already made but to no avail, Prof. emphasized that the people really need to be assisted by every means possible. From here, the journey began!
- Larissa Schulte Nordholt is a lecturer at Leiden University preparing to defend her thesis 'Africanizing African History' on December 1st 2021.
You can find the Nigerian donation page to which direct donations can also be made here:

Unfortunately GoFundMe does not accept Nigerian bank accounts and Nigerians wishing to contribute are therefore advised to do so through the Nigerian page.
