Few people will ever face the battles that Nicci Buford has — and even fewer will do it with the grace, courage, and light she brings into the lives of everyone around her.

I met Nicci four years ago through cheerleading with our daughters. From the very first moment, I was drawn to her heart, her soul, and her unshakable strength. Even as she quietly fought a devastating battle with head, neck, and throat cancer, she showed up with a smile, lifting everyone around her — never asking for anything in return.

Nicci is a nurse — a true caregiver who has dedicated her life to healing others. But behind the scenes, she’s endured a battle most can’t imagine:

Partial hearing and vision loss from radiation

Chronic fluid buildup and tissue necrosis

No saliva production, leading to severe dental decay

$25,000 in dental bills alone, not covered by insurance

Radiation-related necrosis (RRN) destroying bone in her jaw and face

Eight major surgeries, including a 12-hour facial reconstruction

An upcoming ninth surgery

Vocal cord damage

And visually, the right side of her face appears as if it were carefully scooped away — like a sculptor left the work unfinished, leaving her profile changed forever

Despite it all, Nicci continues to work when she can, show up for her family, and even pursue her dreams — she’s starting her doctoral degree this fall. Her spirit is simply unstoppable.
