Mika survived unimaginable neglect, fought her way back, and embraced life with three legs. Now, at just four years old, she needs my help again.
Mika’s Story
At around 18 months old, Mika was rescued from severe, prolonged neglect that left one of her front limbs so badly damaged that amputation was necessary.
Thanks to the incredible care of Glebe Pet Hospital and No Surrender Ottawa, along with the love and dedication of her foster mom, Alyssa, Mika was given a second chance at life.
And what a life she made of it!
Mika didn't simply learn to live with three legs — she embraced life with an enthusiasm that was impossible not to love. She adores people and other dogs, loves car rides and outdoor adventures, and lives for time spent with her family.
For the past couple of years, Mika has shown me just how much joy, love, and adventure a dog can fit into a life on three legs. She has never wanted to sit on the sidelines.
Now, heartbreakingly, Mika is unable to stand or walk, and she needs our help to get her life back.
Devastating Update: Mika Needs Surgery on BOTH Knees
Over the past few months, Mika has increasingly struggled with walking, limping, crying in pain, and having difficulty getting back up. Just as she seemed confident enough to run a little again, she suddenly collapsed and could no longer stand or walk.
Because Mika wasn't improving, we sought specialized care at Capital City Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital. On October 15th, 2026 the surgical specialists determined that Mika has ruptured the cranial cruciate ligament in BOTH knees.
She now requires surgery on both knees at the same time, called a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO).
The estimated cost of these surgeries ranges from $9,500 to $10,800.
The heartbreaking reality is that Mika remains in pain and cannot stand or walk on her own. She depends on her one remaining front limb to drag herself forward. Watching this once-adventurous girl struggle with even the most basic movements is devastating.
But there is hope. We have been advised that with surgery, Mika has a 95% chance of returning to normal function. This gives her a real chance to regain her mobility and return to the happy, active life she loves.
Unfortunately, Mika does not qualify for meaningful pet insurance coverage because her amputation may cause her current condition to be considered related to a pre-existing condition. That leaves me facing these unexpected medical expenses without the insurance support I desperately need.
How You Can Help
As a single mom, I cannot comfortably manage these significant costs on my own. I'm asking for help to make Mika's surgeries possible and give her the chance to live without this pain.
Every donation will help us work toward covering her specialized veterinary care and the surgeries she desperately needs. Any additional recovery, rehabilitation, or mobility support recommended by her veterinary team will also be important as she works toward regaining her independence.
Every dollar brings Mika one step closer to standing on her own four paws again.
Please Help Mika With Her Next Chapter
Mika has already endured more than any dog should have to. She was failed by the people who should have protected her, but she was also saved by people who refused to give up on her.
She took her second chance and ran with it — quite literally!
Now, I'm asking our community to help me give her another chance. I want to see her walking beside me again, enjoying outdoor adventures, playing with her dog friends, and experiencing all the little things that make her so happy.
I cannot imagine watching her continue to suffer when there is a treatment that could give her such a promising chance at recovery.
Please help me give Mika the chance to walk, run, play, and enjoy the happy, healthy future she deserves.
Every donation, no matter the amount, means so much. If you're unable to donate, sharing Mika's story could help us reach someone who can.
To everyone who has already been part of Mika's journey, especially Alyssa, No Surrender Ottawa, and the wonderful team at Glebe Pet Hospital, thank you for helping Mika get the second chance she deserved.
And to everyone who donates, shares, or sends us words of encouragement, thank you for helping us fight for her future.
Mika has spent her life showing me how fiercely a dog can love life.
Now it's my turn to fight for her.
