Give Mekhi A Chance.

Hi, my name is Miranda Randle and I’m the mom Mekhi Mcgruder. You know how things never affect you until they affect you? Well, April 6th 2019 my sons went to Chicago with me for a baby shower. My youngest, 8yrs old at the time, was one of 6 people shot by drive by shooters who were targeting 3-5 guys who were standing 3 houses down from the shower. My son (Mekhi) was left paralyzed from the waist down, with some return on the left lower side. Since his shooting, Mekhi has been in therapy non-stop for 3 years trying to regain some normalcy. Chicago police has never caught any of the shooters. In fact, I haven’t heard a word from Chicago detectives since the day Mekhi was shot. Trying to just move on in life has been a struggle, having to find a bigger home that’s affordable, or needing a larger car just to be able to transport his wheelchair and other equipment is a challenge because an accessible van is way out of price range. KHI has made some amazing connections with other children like him who have been through similar struggles. Some of their stories are even more saddening then Khi’s . It seems like a lot of these little black boys get forgotten about. There are no special (Socrates) awards for them, no lifetime equipment care for them, no accessibility van provided. Why is this ? I was watching the news and saw that an adult and a child, who were also unfairly and unjustly shot and left paralyzed, have been recognized. They have had funds raised, awards for bravery and for being strong, and lifetime equipment and medical care at no cost to them gifted. This makes my heart smile because I know they need this help so much. It also makes my heart break because what about the black children who have been unfairly and unjustly shot? Does no one care about them? Are they not strong and brave? Like I said in the beginning, most things don’t affect you until it affects you. I’ve applied for home modifications and access to an in home lift and was placed on a waitlist, which is why we are reaching out for help now. This is so hard for me, just asking for help is a struggle. Mekhi is growing day-in and day-out. He still has the same chair since the day he was released from the hospital in 2019 because insurance will only cover a chair every 5 years or after a major procedure. But, I know Mekhi deserves to have access to equipment and an accessible home, as well. So if you can help in any way we would greatly appreciate it. #KhiStrong If you are standing with us please Donate and Share this message for us.
