Help Me Fund my Study Abroad Trip to Colombia

About Me

My name is Xavier Williams and I am a Junior studying at The University of Alabama. I am currently majoring in Spanish with a minor in Biology on the Pre-Med track. I am a current Medical Assistant and Scribe while in undergrad; I am obtaining my clinical and shadowing hours to be eligible for Medical School in the next coming two years!

The reason I am creating this GoFundMe is that I am wanting to be fluent in Spanish while in Med School and forever after. As a young black male growing up in the South, I never saw any Black Male role models that I looked up to, or have as that beacon of change in any way, so my journey is to become a powerful role model for young black men who may have an interest in the healthcare field. I will be a Young Black bilingual Doctor in the future and I will need assistance from you all to fully fund my trip to Columbia!

Being a black male in the healthcare field is still not as seen as normal or as seen in the Healthcare world as it needs to be. I want to be a beacon of change in the black healthcare field by bringing my own experiences and my skills from my upbringing and travels to be able to become a better physician in the coming future. I have read on the news and also gotten first-hand experience on how there is a lack of translators in the Healthcare Field and I am wanting that to change. Many kids that have non-native English-speaking parents have to be translators for their families, which shouldn't be the case. Spanish would be the first of numerous languages I pray to obtain in the future as well, and somehow breaking the language barrier would see a progression toward a society that can accurately treat and care for individuals who may not speak the same language.

I am planning on going to Colombia this coming summer and will be there for 6 weeks in an all-immersive program, meaning I will be speaking and thinking in Spanish during the entirety of the program to get the most out of my experience while there. I will also be completing 3 Spanish courses while I am there as well as visiting some of their greatest cities. When I come back I will be able to utilize my skills here in the U.S. while I am on my journey to becoming a Doctor.
