Help Mason travel safely

Donativo protegido
Meet Mason, a bright, enthusiastic, goofy, loves life, 12 year old boy. Like all 12 year olds, he loves to learn new things and enjoy all the world has to offer. However, he has some extra obsticles to overcome to bask in the splendors of the world. Mason was born with cerebral palsy (damage to the brain before or during birth). This effects his muscle function, mostly his fine motor skills (ability to control his body to make precise movements, such as picking up small objests). Mason has mimimal verbal communication, cannot walk, has limited use of his right hand and virtually no use of his left hand. This boy inspires me every day because even though he has to work twice as hard to achieve minimal daily functions he never lets it stop him from doing the things he loves: wrestling with his brother, rapping, playing video games, swimming, helping me in the kitchen. His smile is infectious and he is always wearing it.

Rasing this boy is a joy but it doesnt  come without its challanges. As he grows he wants more independence.  So he was graduated from his maual wheelchair to a motorized. Thus the struggle began.  See when he was using a manual chair I could carry him to the van strap him in, and fold the chair up and put it in the back of the van. Well this motorized chair weighs 400 pounds. So I bought a portable ramp to drive it up into the back of the van (dont even ask about the damage to the back of my van because of this). Which has been working for the better part of a year. However Mason continues to grow himself. Currently Mason weighs 104 pounds. It is becoming harder to lift him to move him around. Getting him in and out of the van is the hardest part of my day. Last year while carring him to the van we slipped on some ice and fell. Mason broke his right shoulder. Thats right, the only arm he can control. So for a long six weeks he was unable to do anything for himself. He had to be hand fed, he missed school, he was unable to participate in the Special Olympics, he slept sitting up. It was a hard six weeks. Mason is all healed now and happier than ever, yet terrified of the ice.

So with saftey in mind (and a bit of relief for myself) I have been looking to get a conversion van. These vans have a ramp built in allowing the passanger to drive right into it and get strapped in wheelchair and all. Oh you could never imagine how helpful something like this would be for us. As of right now taking him out and about is a dreaded chore. Mason loves going out and about meeting people and visiting new places. Being able to enjoy his experiences with him instead of worrying about  geting him in and out of the van would be the greatest gift. The problem is these vans are pricy to say the least. So that is where I need to ask for some help. Anything towards the support of my cheerful boy is a blessing. Even if it is just sharing this post we are enternally greatful for you.
