We dream ... hope ... and make so many projections for ourselves. We ignorantly think everything will happen just like we plan; somehow forgetting we’re not in control. I was no different. I had worked hard to becoming the successful, business owner of ‘A Cut Above the Rest’ (1 & 2), ‘Mary Swann & Company’ and ‘Mary Swann’s Pampered Palace’. THANK YOU to all for the memories; the love and laughter; the Sisterhood AND the Brotherhood! As shared with many during hair therapy time, I fully intended on selling our home, retiring in bliss and continuing to travel around the world. I was going to ‘live free and DO ME;’ that is, until June 3, 2021 (my birthday no less). I was then diagnosed with the rare Multiple Myeloma; a treatable, but incurable cancer.

Not even 3 weeks later and still reeling from this news, I answered the one phone call a mother prays she never receives. My son and only child had passed away. I was dazed; functioning on auto-pilot ... trying to move forward, but with no ground basis from which to do so. I have heard my entire life that God doesn’t put any more on you than you can bear. I remember thinking, though not feeling it, ‘He must think I’m pretty strong.’

Perhaps that strength has come by and through the band of AMAZING friends and family who have graciously transitioned with me; cheering me on in my current voyage. It has been a year of unanswered questions, pain, loss, sorrow and reflection. Despite all, it has not been without thankfulness and even laughter! One thing is sure: God has a sense of humor! As a professional hair therapist, my go-to quote was, “The sharpest thing you wear is your hair.” How ironic. Chemo has claimed my hair so now? The ‘sharpest thing’ I can wear is grace; and an integrity that transparently shows I’m human and struggle many days. But I am a survivor, not a victim! Yes, I have cancer, but it does NOT have ME! It’s comforting being part of a village that provides emotional, spiritual and monetary support. Thank you for every thought, prayer and donation! Even having A+ insurance coverage, I never imagined the ASTOUNDING cost of temporary housing, medication and hospitalization.
