Hello, I'm Maribel, Mexican by birth, and I’ve lived in El Salvador for the past 11 years. Today, I’m asking for your solidarity and financial support.

In 2022, El Salvador declared a "state of exception" which suspended civil rights.

Since then, over 86,000 people — including thousands of minors — have been detained without due process. El Salvador now has the highest incarceration rate in the world at 2% of the adult population.

My husband, a 48-year-old Salvadoran University educator and community organizer, was arrested in July after an anonymous and false accusation.

He was granted release by a judge, but the prosecutor appealed — and now he remains in jail, with no clear timeline for freedom.

Since his detention I have paid $14/day to ensure he had food and a daily hygiene kits., as well as $178 in monthly fees.

I have not seen my husband since his detention. He has been transfered without notice multiple times, and it’s unclear for how long he will be unjustly detained.

I’m emotionally, physically, and financially exhausted, and now, unemployed.

After much prayer and thought, I’ve made the painful decision to return to Mexico, to be near my family, find work, and keep supporting my husband from afar.

I will continue to exhaust all legal and financial options to help my husband. I am not running away. On the other hand, my parents and the rest of the family are waiting for me and want me to return home.

We’re trying to raise $2,000 to help me relocate, cover basic expenses, and keep fighting for my husband’s freedom.

Mi esposo, un educador universitario salvadoreño de 48 años y organizador comunitario, fue arrestado en julio tras una acusación anónima y falsa.

Un juez ordenó su liberación, pero la fiscalía apeló —y ahora sigue en prisión, sin un plazo claro para recuperar su libertad.

Desde su detención, he tenido que pagar $14 diarios solo para asegurarme de que reciba comida y un kit de higiene diario. Los gastos mensuales ascienden a $178.

No he podido ver a mi esposo desde que fue detenido. Ha sido trasladado varias veces sin previo aviso, y no está claro cuánto tiempo más estará injustamente detenido.

Estoy emocional, física y financieramente agotada, y ahora, desempleada.

Después de mucha oración y reflexión, he tomado la dolorosa decisión de regresar a México, para estar cerca de mi familia, buscar trabajo y seguir apoyando a mi esposo desde lejos.

Seguiré agotando todas las opciones legales y financieras para ayudar a mi esposo. No estoy huyendo. Al contrario, mis padres y el resto de mi familia me esperan y desean que vuelva a casa.

Estamos tratando de recaudar $2,000 para ayudarme a reubicarme, cubrir gastos básicos y continuar luchando por la libertad de mi esposo.
