On Tuesday, February 4th, my abuelita, Luz Arrese Villalta de Yarleque (77 years old), who lives in Peru, was rushed to the ICU at Clinica Ricardo Palma at 2 AM after struggling to breathe and experiencing severe pain. Doctors discovered she had just suffered a heart attack, but further testing revealed it was caused by a stress-related heart condition called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

She began experiencing symptoms in mid-December, which gradually worsened and started affecting her daily life. A week before her ICU admission, she visited a neurologist, who suspected she had Myasthenia Gravis (MG)—a rare autoimmune disease that weakens muscles and can lead to life-threatening complications. Once she was in the ICU, doctors confirmed the diagnosis.

What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness and extreme fatigue. It occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the communication between nerves and muscles, making even simple movements difficult. In severe cases, it can impair breathing, requiring artificial respiration, as in my grandmother’s case.

She has been on artificial respiration since the day she was admitted, and her road to recovery is uncertain. Unfortunately, her insurance does not cover Myasthenia Gravis treatment or its critical medication, immunoglobulins (Octagam). Doctors have recommended 7 doses per day over 5 days, which is financially overwhelming for our family.

We are humbly asking for any donation, big or small, to help cover her medical expenses and give her the treatment she urgently needs. Every contribution will go directly toward her medication and care. If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser would mean the world to us.

UPDATE 02/26/25: It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved abuelita, Luz Arrese Villalata de Yarleque, who left us today at 6 a.m. after suffering a heart attack. Despite the strength and resilience she showed throughout her battle with Myasthenia Gravis and her time in the ICU, her body could no longer endure.

We are devastated by this loss and are now focused on honoring her memory and saying our final goodbyes. We will be holding a memorial for her tomorrow and Friday, with her funeral taking place on Saturday.

El martes 4 de febrero, mi abuelita, Luz Arrese Villalta de Yarleque (77 años), que vive en Perú, fue trasladada de urgencia a la UCI de la Clínica Ricardo Palma a las 2 a. m. después de tener dificultades para respirar y experimentar un dolor intenso. Los médicos descubrieron que acababa de sufrir un ataque cardíaco, pero pruebas posteriores revelaron que fue causado por una afección cardíaca relacionada con el estrés llamada miocardiopatía de Takotsubo.

Comenzó a experimentar síntomas a mediados de diciembre, que empeoraron gradualmente y comenzaron a afectar su vida diaria. Una semana antes de su ingreso a la UCI, visitó a un neurólogo, quien sospechó que tenía MIASTENIA GRAVIS (MG), una enfermedad autoinmune rara que debilita los músculos y puede provocar complicaciones potencialmente mortales. Una vez que estuvo en la UCI, los médicos confirmaron el diagnóstico.

¿Qué es la MIASTENIA GRAVIS?

La MIASTENIA GRAVIS (MG) es una enfermedad autoinmune crónica que causa debilidad muscular y fatiga extrema. Ocurre cuando el sistema inmunológico del cuerpo ataca por error la comunicación entre los nervios y los músculos, dificultando incluso los movimientos más simples. En casos graves, puede afectar la respiración y requerir respiración artificial, como en el caso de mi abuela.

Ha estado con respiración artificial desde el día en que fue internada y su camino hacia la recuperación es incierto. Desafortunadamente, su seguro no cubre el tratamiento de la MIASTENIA GRAVIS ni su medicación fundamental, las inmunoglobulinas (Octagam). Los médicos han recomendado 7 frascos por día durante 5 días, lo que es económicamente abrumador para nuestra familia.

Pedimos humildemente cualquier donación, grande o pequeña, para ayudar a cubrir sus gastos médicos y brindarle el tratamiento que necesita con urgencia. Estamos devastados por esta pérdida y ahora nos enfocamos en honrar su memoria y darle nuestro último adiós. Realizaremos un memorial en su honor mañana y el viernes, y su funeral se llevará a cabo el sábado.
