Help Kim Rebuild

Kimberly Andrews was imprisoned in Allegheny County Jail, held without bond, and subjected to conditions that are recognized as torture under international human rights law. Although the dangers of solitary confinement are now recognized as so severe that people with serious mental health conditions, like Kim, should never be placed in isolation, she was forced to survive 80 days in such torturous conditions.
Now she is out and needs your help.

She spent over 80 days in solitary confinement for non-violent misdemeanor charges that rarely result in any incarceration. The jail only agreed to release her from solitary after she sued the warden and other officials in federal court: https://www.post-gazette.com/news/crime-courts/2019/06/11/solitary-confinement-lawsuit-suicidal-inmate-allegheny-county-jail-kimberly-andrews-lawsuit/stories/201906110132
Kim survived conditions designed to crush her spirit: no soap or toothpaste or hygiene items; no phone calls; barely any property; abusive staff; improper and unprofessional medical and mental health care; and a total disregard for how her psychiatric conditions put her at a heightened risk of suicide. https://www.post-gazette.com/news/crime-courts/2019/06/10/suicidal-woman-Allegheny-County-jail-solitary-confinement-lawsuit-federal/stories/201906100088
Kim is out and trying to piece her life back together. And she needs your help.
According to Allegheny County’s records, she owes nearly $3000 in “probation fees”, “restitution”, and other “court fees.” In order to put this situation behind her Kim has to pay off all these fines and fees so that probation can be terminated early.
Our judicial system often saddles individuals with enormous debt burdens as a form of financial sentence, creating a debtor’s prison, where people remain on probation - and at risk of re-incarceration for non-criminal conduct - until they pay off the full amount.
We as a community need to show Kim that she is cared for and supported.
Let’s get her off probation and let her live her life in peace.
Give what you can. And share widely.
Now she is out and needs your help.
