Help keep Hermione mobile and independent

Hello, my name is Rhona and my aim is to buy a lightweight electric wheelchair for our dear friend Hermione as soon as possible as she is in a wheelchair and her shoulders are becoming terribly inflamed and painful from having to do everything on her own.

 

Very sadly, a year ago, Hemione's wonderful sister Sonia died unexpectedly, leaving her to manage entirely on her own in her home. She used to be able to walk short distances with crutches but as the year has gone on, she has had to put so much pressure on her shoulders to wheel herself around and lift herself out of her chair or prop herself up on her crutches, that her shoulders have become more and more inflamed and more and more painful. This means that she now finds it virtually impossible to lift her arms.

 

Hermione and her sister Sonia have been long term residents and indeed pioneers on the Costa del Sol. They were instrumental in setting up the ADANA animal shelter which has brought health and happiness and love to thousands of dogs and initially cats, although now the shelter is only able to take in dogs. ADANA are enormously dedicated and do a wonderful job.

 

The sisters also used to have a second-hand bookshop in the centre of Estepona old town which became a true meeting point for many and a place so many, sometimes lonely, people could depend on as a place of contact, conversation, a place to browse and to even sometimes have their mail delivered. Sadly, there came a time when this was too much for the sisters and they had to give up the shop.

 

Hermione is 81 and has been in a wheelchair for decades and undergone surgery on her legs many times to maintain her mobility as long as possible. Now she is on her own, If we don’t raise the funds to make her life easier and help her to maintain a certain degree of independence she will, in the not-too-distant future, no longer be able to lift herself out of her chair or reach anything that is above her shoulder height and life will become so painful and difficult for her until she won't be able to manage without someone to help her all the time.

 

She does not benefit from a pension, be it a disability pension or otherwise so she is a long way from being financially well off.

 

These two sisters have been leading lights in this area for so many years and have given so much and helped so many, we feel it is time to give something back to Hermione and to honour lovely Sonia’s memory as well.

 

Please can you help us raise the necessary funds to buy the first and immediate necessities for Hermione. A huge thank you to all those who have already donated so generously to this fundraiser. We have come so far in raising what we need for a lightweight folding electric wheelchair we want to keep going a little longer to help buy an adjustable bed which will make it easier and less painful for her to get up and into her chair. She is finding this so difficult now we need to help her as soon as possible. Every arm movement is becoming increasingly painful for her.

We are raising the target from the initial €1,400.-  which we have already surpassed thanks to all our wonderful donors, so that we can achieve these two hugely important aids and hopefully other aids which Hermione will be needing along the way. We are determined to help make everyday tasks be less painful for and so that she can maintain her independence.
