My name is Jamie Dlux, and my mother Lynn is currently hospitalized at MUSC in Charleston, SC, which is two hours away from our home in Myrtle Beach. Her health crisis began in mid-April, when she started feeling unwell. Her primary doctor found concerning liver results and referred her for an ultrasound, which I took her to on April 29th. Later that day, I rushed her to Tidelands Waccamaw Hospital in Murrells Inlet, suspecting C Diff (Clostridioides difficile), but despite telling the staff, they did not test or treat her for it. She spent the night in the hospital, underwent scans and tests, and was discharged the next day with a referral to a liver specialist.
The earliest appointment was over six weeks away, so I called around and got her seen sooner. On May 11th, the liver specialist called to say her liver was in critical condition and she needed to be rushed to MUSC in Charleston. There, she was finally diagnosed with C Diff and started treatment. Because Waccamaw Hospital did not test or treat her, her infection worsened over 12 days, and now her doctors are concerned she may need a liver and kidney transplant. We're still waiting for biopsy results to know for sure, but the uncertainty and fear have been overwhelming for our family.
With Lynn so far from home, my brother, sister, and I have been making frequent trips back and forth to be with her, support her, and advocate for her care. The cost of gas and travel is adding up quickly, especially with prices being so high right now. Lynn is also out of work and we're struggling to get her short-term disability benefits activated, as the paperwork keeps getting bounced between doctors. We don't know how long Lynn will need to stay in the hospital, and it's been incredibly hard to manage these expenses on top of everything else.
This has been the scariest and most exhausting time of our lives. All we want is for Lynn to heal and come home. Any support you can offer—whether it's a donation or simply sharing our story—means the world to us. Thank you for helping us stay together and strong during this difficult time.
