Help, Home and Hope for Charmaine to beat Cancer

Donation protected
Imagine that your bank account is overdrawn, you have stage 4 cancer, you are being evicted from your home, and you are Deaf, so asking for help is even more difficult because there is a communication barrier. This is the situation for Charmaine Logan who desperately needs your help, prayers and a miracle.

Fighting stage 4 cancer is hard enough for anyone to handle, but no one should have to be in the battle for their life and at the same time worry about losing their home and becoming homeless. Charmaine is dealing with both stage 4 terminal cancer and fighting eviction. She is more than $3,500 behind on her rent and has been battling in court to keep her apartment in between going to the hospital for cancer treatments.

Charmaine is not the type of person who asks for help easily. So when she texted me this past week and asked for help, I knew she was in a hard situation. She has tried everything she could on her own to save her home and to stop from being evicted. At the same time, she is trying everything she can for treatment to save her life from this cancer. The reality is, that Charmaine cannot work and has not been able to work for a long time due to her cancer. She needs your help.

Charmaine texted me: “I am so overwhelmed right now going through so much to deal with all this. I don’t even know where to turn…I haven’t sleep much in the past two days. I will fall asleep and then I will wake up two hours later and can’t go back to sleep.”

Charmaine is a dear friend of mine and a member of our DEAF (Deaf Everywhere Are Family)  group. She is always willing to help out. Charmaine has been actively working with Francisca Trexler of Three Angels Deaf Ministries  to help establish a Deaf church in New York City. This year she even volunteered to manage the registrations for our DEAF camp to help me because I was busy at camp with my two-week-old. Although she struggles with her own bills, she regularly looks for ways to give back, giving what she can, cooking, and helping wherever she sees a need. This time, Charmaine is the one that needs help.
Charmaine was diagnosed with cervical cancer a little over a year ago. After going through chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Charmaine recently learned that her cancer has reappeared and spread to other areas of her body.

Charmaine has small cell carcinoma, which is a more unusual type of cervical cancer and is difficult to treat. This type of cancer has a high rate of metastasizing (spreading to other areas of her body) and a low rate of remission.

We have been trying to do everything we can to help Charmaine with her cancer fight. We privately paid for her to go to Dana Farber Cancer Institute for a medical consultation because her insurance won’t cover it. While we cannot afford treatments at Dana Farber, they came up with a treatment plan that she can follow at home in the Bronx, New York.

Charmaine is currently undergoing both chemo therapy and immunotherapy trying to beat this cancer diagnosis. The reality is that even if she does temporarily, small cell carcinoma has a high rate of return. When undergoing chemo therapy, Charmaine is so weak and nauseous that she often can’t eat or keep food down.
Since losing her hair, Charmaine realizes that she is in the fight for her life. Here is a direct quote from her latest text: “my hair is finally gone and it really hits me that I am in the fight for my life…I don’t want to get evicted.

Charmaine’s situation is even more difficult because she is Deaf, so communication and finding help is a struggle. Sometimes she goes through medical treatments and court dates with no interpreters to help her understand what is being said. For example, sometimes when she is at court trying to save her home, the wait is so long for an interpreter that they tell her to come back another day. This is especially hard because Charmaine is battling weakness from her cancer treatments and struggles to get transportation to get to court, just to be told to come again another day because there is no interpreter. Also, Charmaine is not eligible for government assistance to save her housing because she is here from Jamaica on a green card and has not been here long enough.

Before getting cancer, Charmaine cleaned houses to earn money. Since coming down with cancer and becoming so weak from treatments, she has not been able to work. When she was out of money and desperate, she tried to work even while undergoing her latest treatments.

She texted me, “Last Friday, I went to do this cleaning job because I had no money. I felt so bad. Three times when I felt so bad I went in the client’s bathroom and lay on the floor for 15 minutes each time just to get some strength. Daniel [her son] told me I could use his credit card to take a cab  home, which was like $45 and he kept texting me to see if I am ok. I didn’t take the cab by the grace of God, I was able to take public transport home.”

Charmaine has a son Daniel in his early twenties who has put his college studies on hold and works two jobs, trying to help his mom and to save their home. Charmaine sees her son and says, “I try not to let him see me worried. He seems really tired, I wish I could help him more.” They are trying to stay strong for each other. Daniel tells his mom that she still looks pretty even with no hair and that he wants to buy her some nice hats.

Charmaine is a fighter who does not like to complain.  She is both fighting for her life and fighting to save her apartment. She needs funds fast or she will be evicted and become homeless. Can you please help her by making a donation to her GoFundMe account?

We are asking for $10,000 to help with Charmaine’s rent and for her cancer treatment. All donations go directly into Charmaine’s account for her rent to save her home, for transportation to and to help pay for her treatments and recovery. This will enable Charmaine to be able to concentrate on getting well and fighting cancer.

Charmaine needs a minimum of $3,500 to stop her from being evicted from her apartment and to get current on her rent. She will need more to help her pay her rent in the coming months. She also needs money to help with her treatment, medications and food.

Any amount you donate will help ($5, $10, $20, $100, $1000...why stop there?). Please don't think that any amount of money is too small.
