Help Homeground Coffee & Kitchen (Windermere)

Donation protected
Can you pledge the price of a coffee or a Homeground sarnie to contribute to unforeseen costs caused by vandalism and roof damage? Homeground Cafe has incurred these issues on top of their forced closure during the COVID-19 Lockdown. Please help support a local, Cumbrian mainstay of the hospitality sector.

COVID-19 has severely dented the livelihoods of business owners, suppliers and employees in the hospitality industry. The forced closure during the UK lockdown lead many to be without any income to cover overheads that continued to be required to pay.

Many Lake District based establishments suffered, Homeground was no exception. Lockdown regulations have since been eased with premises being allowed to reopen since July 4th, under limited capacity due to social distancing, but this isn't yet a time to rejoice. The busy summer season has now become a desperate scenario for the service industry in the Lake District to build up some cash deposits again. These will help cover outstanding bills from during the lockdown, running costs, securing employment when changes to the furlough scheme come in August and also seeing the business through the bleaker Winter period where footfall is a lot lower with the decrease in tourism. The summer period has already been slimmed so many businesses almost face back to back winters in terms of cashflow. Many business owners are in survival mode and just seeking to cover costs this year.

Unfortunately, Homeground has experienced an even rougher period.

The 20th March 2020 was the date, cafes were forced to close to help stop the spread of COVID-19. An immediate hault to incoming finances. At some point between the 5th April and the 10th April, Homeground were dealt another setback.  Their locked, closed property (not even offering a takeaway option) was broken into by "mindless vandals". Damage was caused to the outside store room & boiler. Freezers full of valuable stock were turned off and several cases of product were stolen. An unnecessary further financial hardship and awful act of a lack of empathy from some selfish individuals.

A further two months and 15 days of closure continued when the UK Government released the news that eating and drinking establishments would be allowed to reopen, under strict guidance, on the 4th July 2020. This should have been a moment of relief for the owners of Homeground but instead they opened their doors to begin preparations only to discover water inside.

What was initially thought to be a "small, infrequent drip" had now become a major leak in the roof of the property. The worst possible thought became reality. The whole roof would require to be replaced! This has now delayed the potential opening date into August but maybe even as late as September. Another catastrophic blow to the owners of Homeground also the future of their employees. The worrying potential of back to back winter trading months with ZERO summer trading is no doubt causing great anxiety.

Homeground is a very popular cafe and for good reason. A mainstay of the high-street in Windermere, having recently celebrated its 5th Birthday, it is often described by customers as one of the best daytime eateries in the National Park. I echo this sentiment and it would be a tremendous loss to the service industry if this unprecedented period (virus, breaking and entering, theft, vandalism and natural damage) caused the door to close.

I want to help and whilst I understand there are many pressing concerns for health, charities and individuals, I know there will be other fanatical regulars at this cafe that will want to pledge support too.

I am asking if you could spare the price of a coffee (£2.50 - £3.00) or the price of one of their signature Homeground Sarnies (£9.50) to help ease this financial burden Rich and Jane are having to negotiate.

I have set a target of £1,000 just to give a helping hand, I have not mentioned this to Homeground but know, like me, there will be many who hold this cafe close to their heart (as well as their hash browns) who will want to support where they can.

Please also share this GoFundMe on social media where you can.

Thank you for your time.
