Hi my name is Dawn Folsom,

May of 2024 I plan to develop 3 city lots into an immersive community
garden that cultivates food, learning, and reconnection. The garden of
knowledge will host an outdoor classroom, playground, community space,
and a garden to feed the local area and help one of Highland Park’s
respected Elders further cultivate her safe haven, which is called
Nandi’s Knowledge Cafe, as tribute to her cafe/bookstore the garden of
knowledge will be a pillar for legacies to come.

Mama Nandi has been an advocate throughout Detroit and her home,
Highland Park, she has been a mobilizer of change and safety, creating
classes for youth to learn entrepreneurship, life skills, and
education, job opportunities for people from all walks of life, and
space for creativity, art, and philosophy. Mama Nandi’s Knowledge Cafe
has endured economic instability, maintaining a business in a town
that has been cut off from resources like their public library and
streetlights.

A little background about Highland Park. Highland Park was a farming
community originally named Woodwardville in 1825. In 1918 it was
officially named the city of Highland Park when Henry Ford moved his
plant there. Highland Park has a monumental history from Ford Motor
Company to the Detroit race riots, being the centerpiece for
resources, refuge, and meeting grounds for many african american civil
rights leaders. To say the least Highland Park has a rich history,
being home to many significant events throughout history, and has
without a doubt made a lasting contribution to the state of Michigan
and the worldwide society as a whole, being a catalyst for innovation
and change.

Mama Nandi’s Knowledge Cafe embodies change, empowerment, innovation,
and strength. What better way to help a community than to plant life
and cultivate minds.
