Help girls from rural villages in Bangladesh
Donation protected
As immigrants, we have had a first hand accord of rural teen girls compensating for their education to work as domestic workers or “servants” in urban areas. From our work in Bangladesh, we realize domestic child labor can be eradicated-or at least reduced-through research and simple solutions. Socio economic dynamics of Bangladesh, and that of many other South Asian countries, can only be altered for the better if young girls are able to pursue an education. The solution is designed for the approximately 420,000 underage Bangladeshi domestic servants. 90% of these kids are 9-18 year old girls who live in rural villages but have to migrate to urban cities-primarily to the capital city of Dhaka-to serve as domestic workers. Though many of these girls often display an interest in going to school and pursuing a future career, they are not provided with the opportunity of schooling.
Our innovative idea is a method by which rural adolescent girls, who would otherwise be working as domestic workers in urban cities like Dhaka or Chittagong, can get the opportunity of quality education in their native villages. Parents refuse to send daughters to public schools, let alone pay for their education. The daughters contribute to the family income through their work as domestic servants in Dhaka before they are married. However, what would happen if the girls could earn through education? That is our idea: a two for one in which rural Bangladeshi girls are provided with quality education with lessons from trained mentors while also extricating themselves from domestic child labor. We will make sure that girls earn money by enrolling in our educational program
