Help for Chip and Brenda Raleigh

Donation protected
In July of 2017 our dad, Chip, (aka Walter Raleigh to a few), was officially diagnosed with throat cancer. Five days a week for seven weeks he made the 3 hour round trip drive to Pittsfield, Massachusetts for radiation treatments, and chemo once a week.

In February 2018, after giving the radiation some time to do its job and clear out of his system a bit, he returned for his scan to check progress. The throat cancer was clear but there were some nodules on his lungs that had metastasized from the throat. Biopsy showed the spots were in fact squamous cells that the chemo should have taken care of but didn’t.

In March of 2018 he began treatment which required one infusion every two weeks for 3 months in Pittsfield. Because it was now considered “incurable”, this treatment was just supposed to stop the cancer from progressing and give him more time.

In August 2018, latest CT scans showed the throat was still clear of any cancer and the spots on the lungs were unchanged. While it would’ve been great to see them miraculously shrink or go away, at least the treatment had been doing its job.

However, by the end of the month, a closer look at the scans showed new spots on his spine. His team of docs felt that the spots were new enough and small enough that radiation should take care of them. Mid-September dad started radiation round 2. Again, daily drives to Pittsfield, 5 days a week. This time it was only 10 days rather than seven weeks.

Now that it’s October, the radiation for the spots on his spine is complete but he still needs treatments for his lungs. Because the cancer spread from the lungs the doctors feel the current treatment is no longer working so something different is needed.

Anyone who knows Chip and Brenda know they are very proud, independent people who ask for nothing yet they never hesitate to offer to lend a helping hand to a friend or someone in need. Now it is them who need a helping hand.

On top of regular bills the mounting medical bills are nearing $20,000 and are a stressful addition to an already emotional encumbrance. Your donation will help ease their minds and allow them to focus on healing. Funds raised will help them pay increasing medical bills, gas to and from treatments and appointments, and other necessary bills such as heat through the upcoming winter months.
