Help Desiree On Her Feet
Beschermde donatie
Dear community,
I am appealing to you on behalf of our dear friend, Desiree Reilly. Desiree was recently diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis – a chronic infection that is eating away at the bones in her body. This rare bacterial autoimmune disease is progressive, and will continue to undermine the bones and organs in her entire body, ultimately causing them to deteriorate and die. Though already in her system for a while, it is finally beginning to advance rapidly, becoming invasive and aggressive.
What began as a strange numbing sensation in the lower parts of her legs a few months ago, quickly became an awful and painful swelling pitting edema 3+ weakness and is now spreading. Desiree is already 1.75 inches shorter than she was 6 months ago, due to the erosion and collapsing of bone in the lower parts of her legs, heels and calcaneus.
Please see photos below.
Our friend is embarking on a long and very challenging road ahead. Over the next six months, specialists at Colombia Presbyterian Hospital and the Hospital for Special Surgery, National institute of health, ect...In which one of them will biopsy bone in her legs and operate on. Then another surgery will intale drilling into the bones with injecting a stimulant of radiation with hopes it will help her bone marrow will regenerate again. Dead and dying bone will be removed and a combination of bone marrow transplants, bone grafts and steel plates will be installed in their place. For the next 1 – 2 years, Desiree’s life will be one of OR’s, biopsies, ICU’s, gurneys, medical transports, and rehab facilities - all while confined to a wheelchair.
As a close friend, it has been truly inspiring to watch her move through this very sobering and dark experience; to witness her discovering and slowly facing and accepting the very harsh reality that an infectious illness or disease is hell-bent on eating away at her own body. She will need every last drop of inner strength she can find and all the emotional support we can offer to help her get through this coming year with her body and spirit intact. She is also going to need a whole lot of help dealing with the mounting pile of medical bills and other costs involved with establishing her new life.
And here’s where you and I can really step in.
On top of trying to manage her medical care and save her own life, here are some of the additional worries Desiree is facing on a daily basis. Where will I live? Who will care for me? Help me out of bed and into the shower? What will I eat and who will prepare my meals? How will I be transported between hospitals and medical facilities? Where will my family stay when they come to visit and how will they get around? How about medical equipment? And extensive, long term physical rehabilitation programs? Thanks to Medicaid, the costs of the actual surgical procedure (Approximately $500,000), will be covered. But that’s all they’re to pay for. The timing of this has been the worst how she copes I don t know. Her resilence as all say is so amazingly inspiring. Right now in Rockland County there is no place to go that is open with bed for someone in this position of needing care, nurses, medical transportation, temporary assistance, DSS, disability none of those are in her favor right now, she is tried every Avenue which unfortunately is leaving her without a residence it is a lot of work for family member to take on and something like this came on so fast that nobody could ever prepair themselves for a time like now if it was your loved one.
The rest is up to us.
We cannot let her bear the weight of these financial responsibilities on her own. Currently, she doesn’t even have the funds to pay for a walker or wheelchair and is about to be homeless. We have painstakingly reviewed the out-of-pocket costs incurred up until now and predicted what we will need to get through the next month and came up with this number: $23,000. Aside from the 5% fee deducted from each donation by GoFundMe, you can be absolutely certain that every penny you donate will be used to pay for Desiree’s basic and urgent needs. The funds will be held by a third party, allocated and disbursed accordingly, and only as needed. Even if you feel its to small to give remeber is big to her at this time. Everyone of us can make her tomorrow easier for her and mother.
Please open your heart, but more importantly right now - your wallet. Every penny counts and time is of the essence. Give freely, with heart and compassion, share this campaign with anyone who might help, and together we will quickly meet this goal and help to lighten at least this part of Desiree’s burden.
Let us count our blessings today. Let’s be grateful for the health we have. And may the kindness we show today be returned to us multiplied - with kindness.
Yours truly.
