As you watch the sunrise over the tree line, enjoying the light breeze through the wind and sounds of birds waking up for the day - imagine what was a quiet moment that you've enjoyed for years in your home - will now be turned into waking up to the sound of humming solar panels with views of tall electric lines and extensive fencing...this is the proposed future of our own backyard.
The proposed solar farms in Kent County deeply impact the agricultural, natural and historical aspects of our communities. The land that will be turned into solar panels is farmable, the land surrounding it is actively farmed and are all within an Agricultural conservation district. But, conservation protects the land except for utilities.
The utilities proposed to be generated in our Kent County backyards will not even impact our community. It will be sold into the grid and sent far beyond our county and state lines.
As Kent Countians, we are proud of our rural landscapes and open spaces. We are proud to be a major point along the East Coast migratory bird flyway. We are proud of our agricultural traditions and families that have dedicated their lives to farming. The solar panels can create crop damage within a half mile radius. The electric lines and flares from the panels are harmful to our wildlife.
These proposed solar farms will deeply impact Kent County. It's not just those that live around the sites, it is all of us. It will destroy historical land dating back to the 1600s that has yet to have a chance for archaeological exploration; it will destroy a wildlife habitat and it will set a precedent that will forever change agriculture in Kent County.
Please help the local farmers and residents working to save this vital piece of land by raising funds to assist with legal fees and expenses.
