Help Christina Say FU to Cancer

Hi, I’m Valerie, and this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write — but also probably the easiest, because if anyone deserves help, it’s my best friend (a.k.a. my turtle), Christina.

We’ve been stuck to each other like glue for almost 25 years (yeah, she can't get rid of me). She’s my partner-in-crime, my soulmate, my “who even am I without her?” friend. She’s also the funniest, most stubborn, most wonderful person I know. She is my turtle.

Right now she’s battling Stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her liver, spine, and bones. It sucks, but she’s still cracking dark jokes, rolling her eyes at the odds, and making me laugh when she should be the one crying. That’s always been her.

Why We’re Raising Money

Because she had to step away from work, she lost her employer insurance. Medicaid said no (yay, US healthcare system). Meanwhile, the bills said “yes” and keep showing up like those spam texts in your phone.

She’s the one you least expect. At first glance, she's quiet, and hesitant to let you in, but oh when she does - you are in for it. She is the one with the darkest humor I have ever heard, the one that will snap you out of a down mood in a second, the one that will say yes to walking around DC at 5am with strangers just for the plot. She is the one that has been there for all of the hard times no matter what. She’s my family. My turtle.

She deserves the chance to keep fighting, laughing, and being the quietest person in the room with the loudest personality.
