Helping Children Heal After Floods and Landslides in Sri Lanka

Days of relentless heavy rain have caused devastating floods and landslides in Sri Lanka’s Nuwara Eliya District. Homes have been submerged, roads and schools cut off, and families have lost everything: food supplies, school materials, and essential documents.

Children are the most vulnerable victims of this disaster.

Thousands of children are now living in fear and uncertainty. Many have been displaced, are staying in temporary shelters, and have experienced traumatic events. Children from estate and rural communities, already living in poverty, are especially at risk of long-term emotional and psychological harm.

This fundraiser supports the creation of Child-Friendly Psychosocial Support Camps, designed to help children recover emotionally and regain a sense of safety.

Why this cause is personal

A few years ago, I studied Global Citizenship and Development at UCLL, which gave me the opportunity to live and work in Sri Lanka for six months. During that time, I was based in Nuwara Eliya, where I built strong connections with local communities and saw firsthand the challenges children face, even without disasters like this one.

Seeing these same communities now affected by floods and landslides makes this cause deeply personal. This fundraiser is a way to give back to a place and to children who left a lasting impact on my life.
