Help Support Brody and His Family Through This Difficult Journey
Donation information at the end of the post
Our sweet boy Brody has been in the hospital for nearly three weeks now, and our family is walking through one of the hardest seasons we’ve ever faced.
Aspen and Tyler have had little time to share update rightfully so as their days and nights have been spent by Brody’s side, advocating for him and praying for strength. Aspen has not left his side along with caring for Baylor in the tiny hospital room.
In these past few weeks, Brody has faced one challenge after another. He has experienced multiple seizures, persistent breathing difficulties, and several infections. Including one in his trach that so far no antibiotics have been able to treat. What would be a simple cold for most, such as the rhinovirus, can be life threatening for him. His heart rate has remained elevated, and his little body continues to work tirelessly just to breathe. There have been several frightening moments where Brody has coded and needed to be bagged to stabilize his breathing.
Despite these terrifying episodes, just minutes later, Brody will often look up with his sweet smile, tell stories, and say “I love you.” That’s the kind of fighter he is full of light, joy, and love, even in the most difficult moments. His sweet little bossy voice has his entire team wrapped around his finger. He loves his nurses and knows how to push their buttons.
Recently, Brody’s medical team noticed blood coming through his trach during suctioning. Along with bigger pieces of tissue. He no longer has IV access, so doctors attempted to place a direct port. During a bronch procedure, they discovered that his esophagus was severely infected and had torn tissue, requiring them to stop suctioning for several days to allow healing.
Unfortunately, things took another difficult turn. Brody began seizing again, his throat started to close, and he went into distress. The medical team made the decision to remove his trach for the first time since he was six weeks old and intubate him. Even with these interventions, his body continued to struggle, and full sedation wasn’t possible as it caused his blood pressure to drop dangerously low. He broke out in a head to toe rash. They were able to place a central line in the early hours of the morning.
As of this morning, Brody has transported by medical flight to a Gainesville to begin ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). This treatment will allow his tiny body to rest and heal while the machines support his heart and lungs. His SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) is progressing rapidly, and ECMO is a critical step in giving him the best possible chance to recover.
Through all of this, Brody continues to amaze everyone around him. Even when his voice is weak and his body tired, he still manages to smile, to love, and to inspire. His strength is nothing short of miraculous.
Aspen and Tyler have both shown incredible faith and courage, but the reality is that the emotional, physical, and financial toll is overwhelming. Between hospital stays, travel, missed work, the cost of eating out and ongoing care needs the expenses continue to grow.
We are humbly asking for your help to raise $25,000 to support Aspen, Tyler, and Brody during this difficult journey. Funds will go directly toward travel, living expenses and any other costs as they arise while they continue to fight alongside sweet Brody.
Both Aspen and Tyler need to be by his side and that results in Tyler not being able to work.
If you are able to contribute, please know that every donation. No matter the amount it makes a difference. And if you’re unable to give financially, and that’s ok we ask that you continue to keep Brody in your prayers. We know that God has carried him through so much already, and we trust that He will continue to hold Brody and our family close in the days ahead.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued love, prayers, and support for our sweet boy.
With gratitude and faith,
The Family of Brody Aspen, Tyler, and loved ones
