Support the Creation of the book Hydra: The Human Atlas
Hydra is one of the most unique places on Earth. A car-free island where donkeys still carry goods, where there are no traffic lights or sirens — only stone paths, sea winds, and echoes of the past. This island has inspired generations of artists, writers, musicians, and dreamers — including Leonard Cohen, who called it his sanctuary.
But Hydra is under threat. Hyper-tourism, short-term rentals, overdevelopment, and ecological stress are unraveling the delicate balance that made the island magical. Families are leaving. Teachers aren’t returning. The soul of Hydra — its stories, people, and traditions — is at risk of vanishing.
I’m Elise Krentzel — a journalist, author, and cultural documentarian who has been visiting Hydra for over 30 years. I'm writing Hydra: The Human Atlas — a book that captures the voices of the island’s artists, elders, activists, and locals before they are silenced or forgotten. I’ve already completed 15+ in-depth interviews and begun weaving their stories into a narrative that speaks not only of Hydra but of what happens when cultural memory is lost — and what we can still save.
Your support will help me return to Hydra this fall to finish the book — to conduct final interviews, collect photographs, walk the alleys where history whispers, and stand witness to what remains.
This campaign isn’t just about helping a writer — it’s about preserving a way of life that is vanishing all around us. Hydra may be a small island, but its fate is a global story.
Will you help bring Hydra’s soul to the page before it disappears?
Any amount makes a difference — and sharing this campaign helps amplify the call.
With heartfelt thanks,
Elise Krentzel
