Help BIPOC USHR prevent a deportation

BIPOC USHR is working hard to help our client, volunteer, and friend, Mehdi Belhadj, stay in Canada. As this CBC story outlines, Mehdi is being targeted for deportation because of his mental health and his use of the local mental health hospital in Charlottetown, PEI.

When Mehdi turned to the Hillsborough Hospital for help in July, they called Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA). They managed to get Mehdi to sign a consent form to hand over his medical records to CBSA, an action that is problematic since a visiting psychiatrist questioned Mehdi's ability to make sound decisions. Mehdi does not remember signing a consent form, nor does he remember giving any such consent.

Now, the CBSA is wanting to deport him to a country in which he has never lived and in which he has virtually no family or support system. That Canada deports people who are mentally vulnerable, precisely because they are mentally vulnerable, is unjust and cruel. The hospital did not put Mehdi’s health first and now, because of that breech of trust, Mehdi has even more challenges to face.

But we're fighting this! We love Mehdi. We have his back!

We have hired a lawyer, Mr. Lee Cohen, who is doing amazing work, and we need to compensate him accordingly for all his hard work.

We would also like to have a little extra to help Mehdi cover any other expenses that may come up, and they most likely will.
