Wie is Animal Rebellion?
Wij zijn gewone mensen, uit alle hoeken van het land die zich ernstig zorgen maken over de ecologische crisis, en de toekomst van mens en dier. Door middel van vreedzame, creatieve en disruptieve acties proberen we de overheid te dwingen aan te sturen op een transitie naar een plantaardig voedselsysteem. Het enige voedselsysteem dat duurzaam en rechtvaardig is voor mens en dier. Animal Rebellion Nederland is opgericht in november 2019, en in maart 2020 is de stichting Vrienden van Animal Rebellion opgericht.
Waarom we bestaan
Over de hele wereld zien we bosbranden, smeltende ijskappen, uitstervende diersoorten en de ondergang van volledige ecosystemen. We bevinden ons midden in een ongekende crisis en we hebben nog maar een paar jaar om er iets aan te doen. De impact van de vee industrie en de visserij op onze planeet is gigantisch, maar onze overheid weigert dit te erkennen, en het noodzakelijke beleid te voeren om haar burgers te beschermen. In plaats daarvan blijft zij een industrie steunen die onze planeet in gevaar brengt en tegelijkertijd miljoenen onschuldige dieren laat lijden.
Ons doel is om de overheid te dwingen de waarheid te vertellen over de klimaat- en ecologische crisis, en de rol van de vee industrie en de visserij. We willen dat de overheid over gaat tot actie, en aan gaat sturen op een transitie naar een rechtvaardig en plantaardig voedselsysteem, de enige manier om onze planeet voor toekomstige generaties leefbaar te houden voor mens en dier. Dit doen we door middel van creatieve, vreedzame en soms disruptieve acties. Waarom? De geschiedenis heeft keer op keer bewezen dat burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid zeer effectief is om radicale systeemverandering te kunnen bewerkstelligen.

Wat wij doen is voor een groot deel afhankelijk van de vrijgevigheid van donoren. Omdat we volledig worden gerund door vrijwilligers (die onvermoeibaar werken), hebben we bijna geen overheadkosten. Dit betekent dat jouw bijdrage direct wordt gebruikt voor het organiseren van nog grotere en effectievere acties.

Occupy Arla
Op 7 maart 2020 heeft Animal Rebellion NL, gelijktijdig met Animal Rebellion Chapters in heel Europa, deel genomen aan de internationale Arla Campagne. De actie bestond uit een kleurrijke veggie dance party bij het vriesvak van de Albert Heijn in Amsterdam, waarbij een van onze rebels werd gearresteerd.
In Nederland kennen we een eeuwenlange traditie van zuivelproducten. De Nederlandse melkveehouderij is, met ruim 0,9 miljoen hectare grond in beheer, de grootste grondgebruiker in ons land. In Nederland is de productie melk per hectare het hoogst van heel Europa.
Tegelijkertijd produceert Nederland ook de grootste hoeveelheid stikstof per hectare van heel Europa. En dit is een gigantisch probleem. Het grootste deel van deze emissies (61 procent) zijn afkomstig uit de landbouw, en dan met name de veeindustrie.
De zuivelindustrie is dus onlosmakelijk verbonden met de hoge stikstofemissies, maar daarnaast heeft het ook andere schadelijke effecten. Voor de productie van koemelk is minstens 4 keer zoveel water en land nodig als voor de productie van havermelk. Daarnaast wordt de melkveehouderij steeds intensiever, wat zorgt voor een steeds eentoniger landschap, met minder kans voor de natuur. Ook staat meer dan een derde van de soorten in Nederland op de rode lijst, wat betekent dat ze met uitsterven bedreigd worden.
Met deze actie vroegen we de overheid haar verantwoordelijkheid te nemen, en bedrijven zoals Arla te helpen met een transitie naar plantaardige producten.
Ocean Rebellion Week
Animal Rebellion NL lanceert zo snel mogelijk de Ocean Week. Het is een week vol actie, in samenwerking met onder andere de Sea First Foundation, Extinction Rebellion, Greenpeace, the Save Movement en DxE Nederland. Het is een samenkomst van bewegingen en activisten vanuit heel Europa.
Waarom de Ocean Rebellion?
De oceanen zijn de longen van de aarde. Maar als we zo door gaan, zijn volgens de VN de oceanen leeg in 2050. De impact van de visserij en de veeindustrie op de oceanen is gigantisch. Enerzijds door overbevissing, anderzijds door vervuiling, verzuring en de uitstoot van broeikasgassen die de opwarming van de zeeën en daarmee het sterven van fytoplankton tot gevolg heeft, wat leidt tot steeds meer ocean deadzones.
Het is tijd om de waarheid te vertellen over de visserij en veeindustrie, en de verwoestende effecten die het heeft op onze onze planeet. Ons doel is om het publiek te informeren over het belang van de oceanen, en onze overheid te dwingen maatregelen te nemen om de oceanen te beschermen. We willen dat de overheid haar verantwoordelijkheid neemt, en aan gaat sturen op een transitie naar een plantaardig voedsel systeem.
We hebben een hele week vol evenementen, beginnend met onze kickoff en afsluitend met ons Fundraiser Festival. Er zal een gigantische Save Square plaats vinden op de dam in Amsterdam, een Ocean March, een vigil bij een levende vismarkt, workshops, swarming, een veggie danceparty en als hoogtepunt zal er een gewaagde civil disobedience actie plaats vinden tegen een grote corporatie. Activisten vanuit heel Europa zullen aan deze actie deel nemen, en het beloofd een groots spektakel te worden.
Who is Animal Rebellion?
We are ordinary people, from all parts of the country that are seriously worried about the ecological crisis and the future of all beings on this planet. We use nonviolent civil resistance to bring about a transition to a just and sustainable plant-based food system, as an attempt to halt massive extinction, alleviate the worst effects of climate breakdown and ensure justice for animals. Animal Rebellion Netherlands has been founded in November 2019, and the Foundation Friends of Animal Rebellion has been founded in March 2020.
Why do we exist?
All over the world we see fires, melting glaciers, species extinction and the disappearance of complete ecosystems. We are in the midst of a massive crisis and we only have a few years to do something about it. The impact of animal farming and the fishing industry is gigantic, but our government refuses to recognize this and to take the necessary measurements to protect her citizens. Instead, she keeps protecting an industry that threatens our planet and at the same causes pain and suffering for millions of innocent sentient beings.
We recognize that one cannot speak about the climate and ecological crisis, without openly talking about the impacts of animal agriculture on the planet, including but not limited to deforestation, ocean dead-zones, biodiversity loss and air pollution. We want our government to take action, and to transition to a just and sustainable plant based food system. The only way to keep our planet healthy for future generations to come. We will do this by taking creative, peaceful and sometimes disruptive action, to compel our government to take the necessary measures. Why? Because history has shown time and time again that civil disobedience is a very effective way to bring about radical and fast-paced change.

Occupy Arla
On March 6 Animal Rebellion NL took part in a worldwide campaign against Arla. The action consisted of a colorful veggie dance party at the dairy fridge of a mayor supermarket in Amsterdam, where one of our rebels was arrested.
In the Netherlands we know a tradition of dairy products. Our production of milk is the highest per square hectares. At the same time, our country also has the highest nitrogen emissions of Europe, which is a huge problem. The largest part of these emissions is caused by animal agriculture.
So it’s clear that the dairy industry is a major contributor to our nitrogen crisis. But dairy also has a huge impact on land- and water use. The production of dairy causes at least 4 times more emissions, land- and water use than the production of oatmilk. Besides; the scale on which the production takes place, becomes higher and higher, which results in a more monotonous landscape with few chances for nature. From the original biodiversity in our country, is only 15% left. As well as one third of the species are on the red list, which means they are endangered to go extinct.
With this action we ask the government to take her responsibility and help Arla transition to plantbased products.
Ocean Rebellion Week
Animal Rebellion NL will be having its first week-long action in Amsterdam from March 27th to April 5th. It will be a week full of action; in collaboration with Sea First Foundation, Extinction Rebellion, Greenpeace, the Save Movement and DxE Netherlands. It will be a movement of movements, and activists from all over Europe are joining.
Why the Ocean Rebellion?
The oceans are the lungs of the Earth. But if we go on like this, according to the UN in 2050 our oceans will be empty. The impact of animal farming and fishing on the oceans is huge; partly because of (over)fishing, but also because of pollution, acidification, and greenhouse emissions that result in the rise of water temperatures and therefore the death of phytoplankton, which leads to more and more ocean dead zones.
It’s time to tell the truth about the dairy and fishing industry and its devastating effects on our oceans, and therefore our planet. Our aim is to inform the public about the importance of the oceans, and to pressure the government to take her responsibility and take measures to protect the oceans. We want the government to transition to a just and sustainable plantbased food system.
On the 28th of March, we will participate in the World Day for the End of Fishing NL with a colorful and spectacular action in Amsterdam. It will be a day to connect, learn, inspire, dance, sing, mourn over lost lives and celebrate life. But there is more!
We've planned a full week of events, starting with our kickoff and closing with our fundraiser festival. There will also be a huge Save Square on Dam Square, an Ocean march, a vigil at a fishmarket, workshops, a veggie danceparty, and also a bold civil disobedience action against a major company. Activists from all over Europe will participate, and it’s going to be a spectacle.
