Did you know 1 in 5 people are deaf or have hearing loss?
Or that when someone with hearing loss rely on lip reading and facial expressions to understand you?
Did you also know that facemasks, although absolutely necessary, have made navigating the world incredible difficult for those who are Deaf or have hearing loss?
My name is Amy Morton and I have a severe hearing loss in both ears. Since 2020 I have been raising awareness of the effect Covid-19 has had on the Deaf and Hearing loss community.
So far, I have self-funded a campaign called Clarity in Communication to help my community by raising awareness towards the exemption cards and showing businesses how to be more lip reading friendly, through my Instagram, Facebook and website.
However, I really need your support as the campaign needs to adapt to our new normal of wearing facemasks.
Even though vaccines are being rolled out, we know that the landscape and people’s behaviours have changed .
There is currently no government support to offer Clear Masks in any setting, including Schools for the Deaf and knowing the devastating effect non-clear masks can have, I want to offer support.
I am wanting to raise funds to buy and supply clear masks, starting with Schools for the Deaf before expanding into the wider community.
The imminent lifting of lockdown will be very isolating for the 1 in 5 if when we can finally go out, we are faced with a barrier of not being able to communicate.
Together, let’s make the lifting of lockdown a less isolating time through supplying clear face masks and awareness.
