Alfredo Portugal, my dear friend from Peru, has faced unimaginable challenges since he was a child. When Alfredo was only three years old, his family became homeless. While playing with other children on the streets, a tragic accident changed his life forever—he was shot in the eye with a pebble and woke up in the emergency room, having lost his eye. For more than 45 years, Alfredo has endured the cruelty and torment of others because of his appearance. He was never able to truly be active in sports, and even simple activities like playing soccer would overwhelm his good eye, leaving him dizzy and seeing stars.

Five years ago, Alfredo looked into getting a prosthetic eye, but the cost was far beyond his reach. Recently, he shared with me that his dream is to have a prosthetic eye made so he can finally feel whole in the eyes of others. I found a local specialist who examined Alfredo and determined that he is an excellent candidate for a prosthetic eye, thanks to the care he received as a child. The funds raised will help make this dream a reality, and any extra support will go toward keeping his good eye healthy with exams and glasses.
