Help a suffering Hmong Family in Laos

Background
The Pika Foundation has been working with Vong for five years and he is the hardest working student supported by our foundation. He is now in his third year of university and he spends what little spare time he has giving free English lessons to other poor students who have moved from the countryside.
We are helping Vong to move his aging parents from their countryside village closer to town. His parents are subsistence rice farmers who hike one hour up the mountain every morning to work on their farm. After working 14 hours there, they come back down the mountain in the dark. They do this every day just to provide food for their family. They are now in their late-60s and this routine is becoming more difficult by the day. Soon his parents will not be able to do this work at all. They also do not have electricity, clean water, or any sanitation services. The nearest doctor is over an hour away by motorbike and during rainy season can only be reached by a three hour walk. Medical care is also expensive so most people do not get help in these areas. As a result, people often die from very treatable conditions. Vong’s young niece recently died from diarrhea, leaving her twin sister and the rest of the family devastated.
How You Can Help
We we are trying to help Vong to buy a small plot of land near Luang Prabang that could be used to build a house for his parents. His brothers will build the house and we have already sourced most of the materials needed for the construction. Now we just need to buy the land so that construction can begin. We are trying to move the family to town as soon as possible, hopefully before the rainy season starts in May.
