Help a Haitian Immigrant Family Keep Their Home

Donation protected
M is a dear friend of mine (she wishes to remain anonymous). She is an incredible artist and healer who needs and deserve the support of a community in this time. M’s is the daughter of immigrant parents from Haiti.  Her parents purchased a home in West Philadelphia in 2006 to establish more stable roots for their family after immigrating to New York in the 80’s.

M’s father passed a few years ago. Her mother has had a few strokes in the recent year that has resulted in her needing a wheelchair for mobility. M’s mother now spends half the year in Philly with her, and the other half with M’s brother in Georgia so  they can share the responsibilities in caring for her. M really wishes to keep the home that her parents worked hard to purchase, but the expenses of keeping a house can accumulate quickly.

Today, the house is experiencing a lot of upkeep issues. The roof recently caved in and there is now a hole in the ceiling of her bathroom. This is just one thing among a list of things that need fixing in the house. As gentrification increasingly spreads through West Philadelphia, these are the kinds of expenses that force Black families to sell their homes, and be pushed out of the neighborhoods they know as home. M has already been approached a number of times by people looking to purchase the house, and she has expressed to me her strong desire to hold on to this home

With $10,000 we can help a Black family keep their home, we can help a daughter continue to care for has mother who has special health needs, and we can take away one more stressor in the life of a Black immigrant woman creative trying to live as freely as she can in a world that wants to keep us down.

Here is what $10,000 could cover for M and her family

These funds would cover:
- Complete roof renovation
- Bathroom ceiling repair
- Living room and dining room ceiling repairs
- Patio ceiling repair
- Backyard door repairs
