Help a Gitsxan land defender and her son

We at Climate Justice Toronto (CJTO) are launching our last fundraiser for a Gitsxan land defender and her son and we really need your help! We are trying to raise $7300 to ensure they can afford housing, food, medical care and gas money over the next three months and want to hit the target by the end of the Holiday season.

They are unable to work due to multiple serious health problems and disabilities. She has fibromyalgia, experiences chronic pain in the disc in her back and is currently undergoing tests to see if her previous cancer diagnosis has returned. He is recovering from colon cancer and was disabled when hit by a truck as a child. The expenses for medications, breathing equipment, special dietary foods, therapy and gas money for frequent hospital visits are impossible for them to afford on top of rent and high grocery prices in their area. Food prices have increased since the recent flooding.

This is part of the frequent violence they face as first and second generation residential school survivors. The fact that they have been left to struggle to survive while dealing with intergenerational trauma is unacceptable. She has spent years fighting against colonial oppression as a land defender against extractive industries and advocate for Indigenous women, girls and 2spirit people in her community. She deserves to be able to care for herself and so does her son.

They are extremely appreciative of all the generosity CJTO followers have shown with donations over these past several months. This has helped them afford treatment and stay housed, but they are currently almost out of funds. They should not have to spend their holidays worrying about making it to the end of the month. We need to do everything we can to make sure they don’t have to.
