Heels4Pads Foundation - Help End Period Poverty

Donation protected
Heels4Pads Foundation operates predominantly in Kenya and was founded by us, Angela Waweru, Monicah Muhoya and Angela Wambui who run the SisterSpeaks Global Organisation (www.sisterspeaksglobal.org). We began the Foundation initially as a CSR project for SisterSpeaks Global but then went on to register it as a Kenyan Charity aimed at raising awareness of period poverty challenges currently being experienced by girls and women across Kenya.

Since operating in May 2019 and despite the challenges presented by the pandemic we have been able to support 19,203 participants in 15 counties in Kenya. This has been achieved through annual Heels4Pads pad distribution drives and through the running of projects in schools.

Our mission is to support 50,000 school girls across the 47 counties in Kenya within the next five years through the development of sustainable solution dubbed ‘Adopt A Dispenser” project. The project is in conjunction with Inteco, Ari Pad Dispensers a female-led process innovation leader providing last-mile solutions in menstrual health & SRH. The tech-driven solution provides easy, hassle-free access to sanitary pads through a pad dispensing machine. The solution offers girls safety and confidentiality to access, change and manage their periods with dignity and privacy. Additionally, through NFC technology capability there is a back-end reporting module that monitors the impact on girls' school attendance and performance and the overall impact on girls’ education and the gender gap. The installation of pad dispensing machines will aim to curb school girls’ absenteeism and advance menstrual health education combined with life skill mentorship programs.

ADOPT A DISPENSER PROJECT OBJECTIVES
  • Reduced period stigma and school absenteeism
  • Reduced vulnerabilities e.g SGBV, Teen Pregnancies, forced marriages, other abuses
  • Reduced economic burden and improved relations between parents, guardians, and society to openly talk about Menstrual Hygiene Health and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights
  • Reimagining the value of the girls in relation to education and wellbeing
  • Increased uptake of STEM subjects through targeted mentorship
  • Narrow girl-boys educational Gap to increase the number of girls entering secondary schools pursuing STEM
  • Social protection and awareness of key human rights issues such as gender equality.
  • Improve the accountability and impact measurement through the dispenser usage report.

In May 2022, the Kenyan Government slashed thei pad distrubution budget from KES460 million to KES260 Million, and this will only exacerbate the issue around period poverty further and will expose the vulnerable to other challenges they may face such as forced early marriages, FGM, succumb to transacting sexual favours in exchange for pads, we might also see a rise in teen pregnancy. Our mission as Heels4Pads Foundation is to mitigate these challenges and ensure girls access to education is not affected due to lack of pads. :
