Healing the Community Through Health & Wellness

Imagine being thirteen years old and finding out that your mother was brutally murdered (2006) in her own home by an ex-boyfriend, while still grieving the murder of your father (1997) who was murdered by the police, nine years prior to this heartbreaking discovery…

I would be completely devastated. This is not a made-up scenario, this is a true story that happened in Omaha, Nebraska. The thirteen-year-old boy this happened to is a man today but the trauma he has experienced as a result of losing both parents to heinous crimes is real. Struggling to cope with the grief, loss and anger he found himself in situations that were not healthy for him later in life.

Today he is on the right track and working to heal and be healthy in all ways possible. Life hasn’t been easy for him or fair to him, yet he is dedicated to helping other live long healthy lives. His name is Cameron Ammons and he committed to helping his community learn about health and nutrition to increase their physical and mental longevity. He is the Owner of Bammin Results, a fitness and lifestyle company that serves to help people improve their physical fitness and be healthier and a Fitness Motivator and Lifestyle Coach with an emphasis on serving the Black community. Why is this important?

Healthcare, access to quality healthcare, access to healthy foods and access to opportunities to improve our health is a racial justice issue too. Systematic and systemic racism and anti-blackness creates detrimental barriers for Black folks resulting in poor health and death. Below I share more on why #HealthJustice is a part of #RacialJustice.

“Racism feeds social injustices like lack of access to jobs, safe housing, personal safety, and quality education. These factors are fundamental determinants of health and well-being. Black communities in both rural and urban areas are more likely to experience food insecurity. Markets are also redlined — the practice of excluding entire geographic areas from receiving resources — resulting in decreased access to full-service grocery stores.

On the other hand, Black communities often have excessive access to dollar stores and liquor stores that provide nutrient-poor, inexpensive shelf-stable items. These are known as food swamps  and food deserts. Access to basic, essential needs varies widely. It’s greatly dependent on environmental factors, including employment opportunities, safe and affordable housing, education, healthcare, and support through local policies. These issues, compounded with decreased availability and lower intake of nutrient-dense foods, increase the risk of noncommunicable diseases.”

Cameron wants to do his part to be a solution to this huge problem and you can help him. This fund was organized to help Cameron with initial start up capital, professional and legal fees, marketing and branding, insurance, and personal and online equipment to help him not only provide his services but also to lay the foundation for owning a brick-and-mortar space of his own to provide health and wellness services to the community.

Systemic racism is attacking Black and Brown bodies  from every direction including the healthcare system that includes fitness and nutrition services. You can help be a part of the solution to provide safe, affordable, and racially inclusive spaces and services for members of the Black and Brown community of Omaha. Health justice is a racial justice issue and if you believe in racial justice, I hope you also commit to being a part of this economic justice initiative.

Please contribute to Cameron’s fund frequently and share it widely and consistently. Thanks in advance for your support.
