Knowing the magnitude of the fight ahead, Agunda Okeyo--writer, producer, organizer and activist--together with a cohort of committed activists and organizers--decided to commit 2017 and beyond to unrelenting, strategic and innovative social justice work and launched Hater Free NYC (HFN). They are now re-launching "Hater Free NYC,"  a platform for political education with a priority towards addressing housing issues and gentrification in New York City. Official edorsements TBA.

Hater Free NYC (HFN) centers itself with women, people of color, immigrants, and true accomplices fighting for holistic community, justice and inclusion in the Big Apple. Let's join together and resist because New York City, the home of Lady Liberty, should be hater free!

On February 11, 2018 Hater Free NYC will lead a March for Critical Thinking in NYC. This date marks the 27th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison where he served a lengthy 27 years in prison in his fight to free South Africa from the horrors of apartheid. This march is from a decidedly anti-racist and global perspective on the importance of critical thinking in the 21st century in order to address 21st century problems.

In the words of legendary NYC based organizer and activist Ella Baker, "Strong people don't need strong leaders."

About Agunda Okeyo:

Before and after the 2016 elections Agunda threw her life into resisting injustice. A Smith College graduate and native New Yorker, she is widley know as a writer and producer and created the longest running black woman centered comedy show Sisters of Comedy at Carolines on Broadway. She's a co-founder of WOC led pre- and post- election organzing effort #GOPHandsOffMe that held NYC local and national protests at Trump properties around the country. They called for the GOP to drop Donald Trump as presidential candidate; for an end to sexual perdation, violation of women's reproductive rights, and GOP's history of sexist, racist and xenophobic legislation. In the new year, with the country reeling Agunda launched Hater Free NYC initially as a boycott of Trump cabinet members and their NYC based business interests, having researched every business connected to Trump & co in NYC. She particiapted in the 2017 May Day protests under the banner of HFN and a number of other local actions. She worked on the Beyond the Moment campaign with The Movement for Black Lives to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's Beyond Vietnam speech where Dr. King urged a global consciousness of human rights and interrogation of anti-black racism. Next Agunda served as National Communications Chair and NYC Co-Chair of the March for Racial Justice (M4RJ) that emerged following the aquittal of Philando Castille's killer, a murder recorded on Facebook Live that shook the nation. M4RJ organized a march that included The March for Black Women (of which Agunda was on the steering commitee) with thousands in attendance in Washington, D.C. on the national mall. M4RJ held over a dozen sister marches and Agunda was also the M4RJ NYC Co-Chair rallying several hundred New Yorkers in Brooklyn and marching across the Brooklyn Bridge. Recognizing the need to go further and dig deeper to uplift women, people of color and immigrants Agunda has relaunched Hater Free NYC as a political education platform. She has written for numerous pulications (VICE, O Mag, Salon, OkayAfrica, The Daily Beast, Women's Media Center, Curve Mag) on white supremacy, sexism and geopolitics plus serves on the local board of Women Action and the Media (WAM! NYC). Agunda is a third generation Kenyan feminist and humanist. In her own words:

"Many people don't think I'm human. I'm black, African, a woman and pansexual. I make no sense to these people, but I was raised by a glorious, intelligent mother who loved me and made sure I understood my value and gifts. I have always cared deeply for others, perhaps even more than myself. I have sacrifised status, money, security, health and sometimes peace of mind in order to be the person I believe myself to be--a teacher, a mobilizer and compassionate being. I did this this against all the odds and now I need people to bet on me and bet on Hater Free NYC. Our world is in desperate peril and we have to raise our collective consciousness and respect for women & POC leadership across the globe. This is about the human family, this is about love. I hope you will donate today and help me and my cohort realize a hater free world...first let's begin in NYC. No biggie!"
