Home Truths Haunt Beautiful Recording To Raise Funds for Domestic Violence

Waterford-based  choir “Harmania” has collaborated virtually in lockdown to record a beautiful song about the importance of home to raise vital funds for domestic violence survivors in Ireland.

Members of Waterford based Indie Choir ‘Harmania’, led by founder Róisín McGrath, have launched a beautiful rendition and video of The Cinematic Orchestra’s hit song ‘To Build a Home’. The group, working with Safe Ireland, wants to raise as much money as possible, and awareness about the vital importance of having a safe home, to support the 39 Safe Ireland frontline domestic violence services across Ireland.

“Never has the importance of home been more apparent than it has been in 2020” says Róisín McGrath “For most of us it became our place of sanctuary and safety. However, for so many people up and down the country, the home - the place where you should feel most secure and protected – is where they have found themselves most vulnerable and at risk, entrapped with their abusers.”

A report from Safe Ireland, called ‘Tracking the Shadow Pandemic’, recently revealed that a total of 3,450 women and 589 children who had never contacted a domestic violence before, looked for support and safety from abuse and coercive control during the first six months of Covid-19, from March to August. It also shows that every month of those six months, at least 1,970 women and 411 children received support from a domestic violence service and nearly 34,000 helpline calls were answered across the country – an average of 184 calls every day.

“The figures really are staggering.” adds Róisín “We felt strongly that we cannot go into another year – a year of huge hope perhaps – without seriously addressing the issue of domestic violence, together, as a more caring society. We were also really conscious as a group of friends and singers that we can start to make a difference, by being more aware of domestic abuse, by talking about it and by being informed to support survivors.  What’s frightening is that with the statistics, we never know who is living with abuse and control. It could be your friend, your colleague, your neighbour. It could be you.”

Safe Ireland said that it was honoured to be involved in this wonderful song and show of such community commitment to shining a light on the centrality of having a safe home for survivors. The Safe Ireland statistics also show that 1,351 requests for refuge – or 7 requests per day – could not be met between March and August 2020 as there was no space due to lack of funding and resource.

“Home is so important to domestic violence survivors,” Mary McDermott, Co-CEO of Safe Ireland said. “What we often fail to grasp is that when a woman, often with her children, has to flee her home because of abuse and intolerable control, she is homeless. She has been forced from her home by the actions of an abuser.”

“Our member services are working tirelessly to help keep women safe in their own homes, and to help them find safe accommodation in the community,” she continued. “We love this song because we have to keep reminding ourselves that home can be a sanctuary, and instead of the situation where she is forced to leave, we need to move to ensuring that the abuser is forced to leave instead.”

Being a Waterford based choir, Harmania and Safe Ireland have agreed to equally split all funds raised between Waterford's local service Oasis House and nationally to Safe Ireland.
