Hanchett Park Sign and Iris Garden Project
Steuerlich absetzbar
Hello, we're Alanna and Haru and we've lived in Shasta-Hanchett since 2014. During that time we've come to love and appreciate this wonderful historic neighborhood and we're looking forward to raising a family here.
In 2020, after years of trying, we were thrilled to become pregnant with our daughter, Emmeline Iris Dutra Sakai, who was due in February 2021. Devastatingly, despite all our love and hope, Emmeline was stillborn on February 27th, 2021, a victim of a cord knot (you can read more about our story here ).
As part of our grief, we have taken to periodically distributing irises and iris bulbs to anyone passing by our house as a way of celebrating Emmeline's life. We have also planted iris bulbs around our area, including in the traffic island in front of our house at Hanchett and Park.
As Emmeline's first birthday approaches, we were thinking of ways we can compliment her irises. In discussion with our neighbors, we happened upon the perfect idea.
The end of Hanchett Avenue on the Alameda has a beautiful sign and pergola welcoming visitors to our street. This structure was carefully designed to match historical photos of the neighborhood one hundred years ago. As you can see in the lower right of the photo below, some of Emmeline's irises have even found their way into the garden that surrounds it.

We are raising funds for the 501c3 that made this happen in order to create a complementary structure on the traffic island on the other end of Hanchett Avenue at Park Avenue. Apart from a tree (and the irises we planted) this area is bare dirt that could benefit greatly from some love from the neighborhood.
Please join us in honoring our daughter, as well as bring some additional beauty to Hanchett Avenue.
