Before COVID-19 struck, nearly 3.2 million Somali’s lacked access to health services. The need for health systems that protect everyone has never been more urgent with the pandemic, as it highlights how the Somali health system is gravely unequal and healthcare workers are vastly underprepared. Gaps in the system affect marginalized citizens the most while simultaneously reversing decades of progress on health and well-being.
Our pilot country Somalia – has one of the world’s highest child and maternal mortality rates in the world. In Somalia, women and girls have limited access to health services, and maternal mortality rates are amongst the highest in the world. According to UNICEF, every 2 hours a mother dies due to pregnancy complications and four in 100 Somali children die before the first month of life, eight in 100 before their first birthday, and 1 in 8 before they turn five (UNICEF, 2019).
Our team has has worked closely with local doctors and community champions co-designing comprehensive m-health programs tailored for Somali urban/rural end-users. OGOW is the first m-health application designed to support caregivers, frontline workers and humanitarian agencies across Somalia.
OGOW EMR is actively supporting rural and urban health facilities in keeping medical records, health promotion, and immunization uptake by providing critically important information to providers and caregivers to benefit and empower all Somalis, especially women and girls who need to access community health and primary care services. All of these are helping Somalia meet its SDG goals, and more importantly, improve the lives of the most vulnerable populations in the country.
OGOW EMR is supporting Somalia’s — COVID-19 (RCCE)
In an effort to support Somalia’s preparedness and response to combat COVID-19, OGOW EMR launched a feature within our mobile health application to address concerns, misinformation and rumors around the novel coronavirus (Covid-19). The tool includes a contextualized self-assessment questionnaire and an instructional video in Somali. The solution is designed also to improve two-way communication between caregivers and providers and provides real-time Q/A feature that responds to health questions in Somali.
All of the content been endorsed with MoH, and it can also be found in the official Repository of COVID-19 Resources under the joint coordination body between the Ministry of Health and the UN, the Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) taskforce.
